Hi all,
My WCG Client today gave an info. that a new client is available in the 6.10.x series, specifically 6.10.60.
So while its a bugfix release essentially should we update to it ? Also a bit concerned that why did not WCG alert to its clients/subscribers of new releases of BOINC ? Looking forward to info. |

The last I checked, at least one BOINC project had reported that their workunits will run under 6.10.58 but not under 6.10.60. So I would be cautious about considering it actually an improvement.
I suspect that the main reason why WCG is not posting alerts about new BOINC versions is that none of their subprojects currently use any features available only in the newer BOINC versions (mostly GPU-related). |

For the Cosmic log see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=2518
----------------------------------------BOINC 6.10.60 released for Windows and Linux. Change Log: Linux: Project list issue in the attach wizard that lead to a crash. SCR: Follow the Mac's lead and gracefully exit the Data Management thread. Preserve the handle to take more drastic actions should that not work. SCR: Fix compile breaks. Linux versions are released through package managers. There's nothing compelling there and AFAICS no new WCG Windows build, which would set off a message from here to go update the Windows release **. What I do know from the alpha mail list is, that WCG initiated an effort and worked with Intel and Berkeley to fix an old / rare hang issue with the screensaver which was tested in the 6.12 development version, but really no idea if this behind a backport, --//-- edit: ** IF running an original WCG BOINC client package (link on My Grid and at forum page tops), starting with v 6.2.28. These clients have special lines in the cc_config.xml that make it listen for notifications from WCG/IBM and not like yours and most everyone's to Berkeley, where your message came from... NOT any one project! The special <options> lines can be added to an existing or to create cc_config.xml as described in the FAQs: Can I trust the World Community Grid software?. These options as can be found in the FAQ's wiki cc_config link are shown below and will cause messages to be send to the client when WCG has a new version, which is allot less often than from Berkeley. <client_version_check_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.ph...ent_version_check_url> [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 3, 2011 9:17:25 AM] |

To our knowledge, the 6.10.60 client does not contain any change that we require. We conducted a security review of the 6.10.58 client as well as extensive testing on it. We will not request our users to upgrade the version of the client until there is a genuine reason to do so.
This does not mean that you can't update to 6.10.60. It simply means that the version we have tested, reviewed and meets the needs of World Community Grid is the 6.10.58 client. We are working heavily with P4SP and BOINC on researching the screen saver issue that SekeRob mentions above. Although this particular issue only impacts a very small proportion of the user base (maybe 0.1%), it very dramatic in the impact to the end user experience. If we are able to find and resolve the issue, then that will likely lead us to update our version number to the latest in the 6.10 line. The 'SCR' changes that SekeRob mentions are driven by this work. However, they had no impact on the issue so we are continuing to investigate. |

I have version 6.10.58
I never got a notice to update to this version like i would with other software. I also wish there was a history log of changes made to the software to see the advancements we have made. With GPU support ready to go it be helpful if you already had the community already supporting it then to discover it later. Maybe a red light saying update or a notice. I dont know but just like FireFox or Chrome they have a small pop up saying their is a updated version you can download. I just like to have my system running at the top performance and secure as it can be. |

6.10.58 is the version with which WCG will run it's first GPU project. Compiles are made to also be able to handle ATI cards i.e. no need to upgrade, which is why WCG skipped any upgrade notifications (that only go to those that have original and clean WCG 6.10.58 installs).
BOINC itself does not do anything but managing the tasks. The science apps do the work and those are automatically updated whenever there is a new version, without notice, though thinking about this, it might be a good idea, to send those to 6.12 and up clients, as security software sometimes responds ''alerted'' when a new science version tries to run. --//-- |

I have version 6.10.58 I never got a notice to update to this version like i would with other software. To get anything besides "hidden-away in the log and very easily overlooked", you'll need to run v6.12.xx or later. These clients includes a new Notices-tab, there among other things messages about new client-releases is included, and example WCG's news-posts. I also wish there was a history log of changes made to the software to see the advancements we have made. The highlights is listed http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/VersionHistory while the full checkin-notes for the various clients is listed on the BOINC message-board, see under http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_forum.php?id=2 for the four stickied "Change Log"-topics, each topic details a specific series of BOINC-clients. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. All of my CPUs are dedicated to WCG and I only contribute 60,000 points per day with my CPUs. How far away is a GPU project? Once WCG supports GPU, I am going to move all of my GPUs to WCG which may increase my WCG contribution ten fold, assuming the points will be equivalent!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
