Best profile for laptops

Is any specific canned profile best for Laptops so as to minimize heat generation but still get some work done?

Thanks,

Kev cool

Re: Best profile for laptops

Use one of the presets device profiles ... they have some really self-explanatory names such as "Power Saving", "Default" (60%), "Maximum Output", "Minimum Impact". All made so members can select them without deep thought. Refer to Start Here FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033 for the hand-holding part ;>)

Just MAKE SURE you have a GOOD backup, I have roasted TWO different hard drives in my laptops over the years!!! MAKE SURE you change the time to write the cache setting in Boinc to 900 seconds, 15 minutes as it really does help!! One more thing get a laptop cooling pad to go under the laptop, it DOES help!!

Re: Best profile for laptops

It absolutely just boggles the mind, I just had a huge thread about the issue of heat, heat as an issue to be dealt with by BOINC, little was made of it, and now in the last two days several more people coming forward with heat questions.

Yes, BOINC does give a default for laptops, their default for everything, Number of CPU's at 100%, CPU usage at 60 %. Lots of people then put desktops at CPU usage at 100%.

I brought up heat qua issue because with five new or newish CPU's, starting with an i7-920 and i5-520M, and now an i7-3930K desktop,I have faced heat issues never before encountered in my digiteria.

I run three laptops, an i7-840QM, i7-2720QM, and the afore mentioned i5-502M.

After a lot of trial and error, I have all at 100% of the processors, and CPU usage set at 50-60% depending upon test results. It was suggested that the CPU activity would be way smoother if I cut the number of cores and ran those cores at 100% usage. Smoother yes, but way hotter, so I switched back. I want ot keep my temps at around 20% below the manufacturer's (Intel) stated limit.

You must do your own trial and error. I did not come out with one answer for all of the machines.

Paramount is to get a temp gauge - I use CoreTemp - keep it launched and minimized, and pay attention to it. Ambient (room) temperature changes will cause fluctuations.

Good fortune to you.

Agree. One additional factor that seems to affect core temperature is which sciences are being run. I have experienced, and several other folks have also mentioned on these boards, that the Vina WUs (GFAM, DSFL, SN2S) run hotter than the other kinds of WUs.

Why worrying about specific profiles.
Every kind of cpu usage will cause a different increase of temperature.
Also the ambient temperature has an influence on your maximum temperature.

Why not keep your temperatures below your own desired threshold, independent of the science currently running combined with the actual room temperature.

You can achieve this by using eFMer BOINC TThrottle
