Re: Computers tips

One for Firefox... the scrollbar on right is in the same place as where I put me Cairo-Docking bar (Linux), often moving the mouse too far and latter popping over the scroll-bar... annoying delay ... have to move the mouse away, then move in again, slowly. The fix was though easy in Firefox... move the scrollbar to the left of the webpage area: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-move-scrollbar-fr...ft-in-mozilla-firefox-30/

The value set to 3 and restart Firefox did it... now the scrollbar sits side by side with the scrollbar for the bookmarks sidebar.

Re: Computers tips

Restore Chrome Bookmarks Bar

The problem with moving over to a different web browser is that when you change something, the option to change back isn’t always located where you’d expect. Take for example the other day when I accidentally lost my Google Chrome Bookmarks Bar. It was simply a matter of right-clicking on the toolbar and de-selecting “Always show the bookmarks bar” to lose it, but finding the option to turn it back on was not where I expected.

So, today I’m going to save everyone else the time and just point it out.

In Chrome, click on the wrench icon in the upper right-hand
corner.

Now, go to Tools, and the top option is to Always show bookmarks bar. Click it, and you’re all set. Alternately, you can also hit Ctrl+Shift+B to get it back.

Re: Computers tips

Windows Vista and Windows 7 have a built-in utility that can check for problems with the computer’s memory. Although the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool often kicks in automatically when it senses an issue, you can also run if manually if the computer is behaving erratically and you suspect the memory chips might be involved.

To use the utility, go to the search box in the Start menu, type in mdsched.exe and hit the Enter key. In the box that appears, you can choose to run the memory utility right then with a restart — or the next time you restart the PC. When the computer restarts, the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool kicks into action. If the program confirms an issue with the memory, you can replace it or take the computer into a repair shop for professional help. Microsoft has more on using the memory tool here

Re: Computers tips

If you have an external drive that is always plugged into your computer, did you know that with Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can enable write caching to speed up the performance significantly when writing to the disk? Well, you can! Let's learn more about it.
Write caching isn't enabled by default for external drives, because removable devices could lose data if you unplug them too quickly. So, be sure to take care when using this setting. To change this setting, just type Device Manager into the Start menu search box and hit Enter, or click on the Device Manager into the Start menu search box and hit Enter, or click on the Device Manager link.

Browse down to the external drive that you wish to enable write caching on, and double click it to open up the Properties screen. Or, you can right click and select Properties.

Now, just change the setting to Optimize for performance in Vista, or Better Performance in Windows 7, and click OK to continue. You'll have to reboot your computer for the setting to take effect. Once done, you can go on and enjoy all the additional speed!

Re: Computers tips

This is a brilliant idea. If you have a friend with some storage space, you can back up (encrypted) to each others' computers for free.

Re: Computers tips

Even with the best antivirus software, new drive-by viruses come along every day running suspicious files through ,Jotti's Malware Scan, a free website that scans with twenty databases.Got a file in email that was pronounced clean by Symantec and 19 of the 20 databases on Jotti's, but fortunately the 20th found the virus in it. A day later, 10 of the databases still thought it was clean. So there's (even more) safety in numbers

Re: Computers tips

The Virus Total site runs suspicious files through 42 scanners and also scans URLs. Sounds even better. Now you have no excuse not to "keep it clean!"

Google Scholar

Do you have a friend or loved one making their way through college? “Google Scholar”, where you can search all kinds of academically published books, papers, peer-reviews and theses. It’s the perfect tool for info and citations!

Re: Computers tips

Ive recently started using Advanced system care from IObit (started with smart Defrag and then paid the 13bucks to get the rest of the tools). One feature is to disable a lot of unnecessary windows and other programs running in the background (It was polite enuf to ask me if I wanted to disable BOINC, real media player and one other program I forget; so i disabled all but BOINC). Among the things it disabled were the widgets on my desktop windows update etc. 27 services on my machine total. I'm wondering if anyone has used this and seen any measurable benefit to BOINC. (It can also turn them back on again for when your actually at your desk using them quite easily).
Here's hoping that a free/cheap utility can save a few percent!
