Re: CPU cooling suggestions

Someone early last year like Q2-06 was going on about an air intake duct directly to the CPU which brings the coldest environmental air to the heatsink.... sounded logical and low cost, if any. Remotely understanding all the aerodynamics, me think that an open case certainly prevents the designed airflows to happen.... at least put a grid in place to prevent the cat or other rodents from taking an excursion.

Re: CPU cooling suggestions

If you don't have any pets and the case is in a safe place where it can't be jostled or bumped, I think you're better off without the case cover. However, it is a little bit of a risk. At my old apartment, I kept all my cases open.

The other thing to consider is the noise. You'll hear more of the internal workings like the HDD searching, noise from the fan's, etc.

You can get the same effect by just adding a couple case fans - the bigger the better. On my Q6600 I have 4 90mm fans that do a fantastic job. In 2 other cases I have 4 very quiet 120mm fans. These, together with the fan on the PSU almost eliminate any difference between case and ambient temps.

BTX takes advantage of this. A large fan in the front pulls cool air over the CPU heat sink via a shroud (no fan needed on CPU hs) and pushes it over the rest of the mobo and out the rear. It's a nice set up. Very quiet. Have one on my desk and it barely makes noise. The most noise I hear is the hard drive activity, which is still quiet even with both cores maxed out. Unfortunately it would be a big no-no to install boinc on this one.

Yes but when will BTX be the standard, if ever? confused

Re: CPU cooling suggestions

2. It is funny to see that even with a big desk fan blowing directly on, my processor, it runs hot. Gotta love this P4 - it basically heats my room!

That Prescott-cpu you're having is notorious for its high temperatures, especially the 3,6 and 3,8 GHz. wink devilish

Re: CPU cooling suggestions

since this discussion has reached case design, I'll submit a picture given to me several years ago. The fan in this picture is ornamental, but give the idea of what could be done. Be sure to lock the wheels.

Re: CPU cooling suggestions

I have a huge box window fan that i'm thinking about attaching to my case. I figure that while I might not get "ideal air flow," I will more than make up for it in cubic feet of air movement.

Re: CPU cooling suggestions

I cleaned out the side fan that blow air onto the CPU/heatsink fan and that has dramatically improved airflow and temperatures. I just ripped out the side panels and the mesh screen for maximum airflow between the 70mm fan on the side of the case and the cpu heatsink/fan. Can't wait until I get my new 120 mm 130 CFM fan, pci vent fan, and 60mm fans to blow on the hdds!

Well, now there is this 4 core thing under my desk with a pipe from the outside directly onto the CPU with a fan in it drawing in air and blowing it on the heat sync, a second fan pulling the air out on the other side. Speedfan graphing out 4 flat lines of 39,41,42,44 celcius after 3 hours full throttle, so not going to meddle further. Now knowing how it looks, the P4 will get the same treatment. Literally, the case will be closed (for me) :D
