I thought I had pointed out some valid critiscisms. Particularly that the web site doesn't promintently enough get across the message of what WCG actually is... prominently enough that a new reader gets the message before their attention is lost Yes the infos there if you actually sit down and read the text... but you have to have decided it's worth reading. Do most web users on first visit to wcg? My collegue didn't. It only took me a quick 2 second google to find web design recommendations that suggested that visitors don't generally read a web site in detail when they first arrive. I'm sure if I do more searches I can find more. Anyway, just my feedback. If your happy that the website is fine, then forget I mention anything. I would imagine that if yuou stopped the average guy or gal in the street and asked which was more important... curing cancer, aids and dengue, or alternatively finding little green men, that most would think curing cancer, aids and dengue..... so why, after 3 years has wcg only got 300,000 contributors?... last time I checked (sometime ago) SETI had around 2million. I'll go back to lerking. Hi tresjolie. I would like to offer you this little gem of a video about WCG that is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE3N8v1RzJo I am sure this would catch your collegue's attention ![]() Cheers ![]() |

Hi Diana that's a great video on YouTube
----------------------------------------Once again guys you are not listening to what poor tresjolie is trying to tell you Just because all of the words are all there doesn't make people sign up The site has to engage the viewer into action and I think poor tresjolie is just trying to point out that it doesn't In fact it might be a hurdle that people have to jump to be able to see the wood for the trees of what we are doing here Now many moons ago I was asked to comment on the contents of the front page and I said what is this LARGE SCALE VOLUNTEERISM <-- that's a terrible form of words for what we are about, but the response I got is the same as tresjolie I got told that Volunteerism may be defined as contributing one's time or talents for charitable, educational, social, political, or other worthwhile purposes, usually in one's community, freely and without regard for compensation. Since the seventeenth century, Americans have shaped their nation by their voluntary efforts: providing services, organizing political action, caring for the poor, reaching out to the disadvantaged, providing education, ensuring equality and civil rights for all citizens, and working for change. or some such like I'm an idiot Use a bigger font, use Diana's Video clip, say less to say more but don't respond to a suggestion to improve the stickyness of the WCG website by effectively saying "what's your problem" That's no way forward Dave ![]() |

We already know about loads of flaws in the WCG website (heck, I pointed out half of them myself!)
But complaining that it isn't "in your face" enough is counter-productive. The site has to maintain a professional look that won't scare off corporate types thinking of adding their massive networks to the grid. Purely as a matter of taste, I don't like flashy "in your face" promotion anyway. If the site looked like the suggestion above, I would never have joined. This is a classic case of "you can't please all the people all the time". But with people like you, David, to fill in the gaps - maybe we can provide something for everyone. |

Purely as a matter of taste, I don't like flashy "in your face" promotion anyway. If the site looked like the suggestion above, I would never have joined. It doesn't have to be flashy in your face. When I glance at the page I see.... "Who we are" "How can you help" "What we do" "Whats new" So in the 2 second glance most people will give the site, they know.... well, nothing!! All you've told them is the questions that they probably already knew they wanted answers to. Rather than making the questions prominent.... why not the answers!! Same font, same format. Just change the headings from the questions to the answers. "One grid for ALL" (in place of the text "Who we are") "Cancer, Aids, Climate,...and more...." (in place of the text "What we do") "Change the world : Download here" (in place of the text "How can you help"). All the same info underneath the headings can stay. No flashy flash. All the info that's currently there is still there... we're not hiding anything.... just making the key answers prominent rather than the un-informative questions. ![]() |

the corporate types are not adding their massive networks (apart from IBM)
----------------------------------------You can't get this thing past their IT Security Crew No way no way "What it connects to the internet - we can build a firewall to stop that - which ports does it use" That the end of that story. I have tried So how about appealing to real big hearted folk like you and me? There's plenty of us out there ![]() |

You make a good point; the headings could be improved. However, I don't think your headings are a great improvement. Market-speak isn't really very effective.
But I still disagree on the fundamental point: people HAVE to read what World Community Grid is about. You can't sum it up in a couple of words. Doing so will mislead people, and I don't want that. You say people don't read websites? I do. I don't want anyone joining World Community Grid without knowing exactly what they are doing. If this means they have to read a few paragraphs - well, that won't kill them. |

n.b. No other action must be taken
----------------------------------------This sounds like an order "You don't need to do anything else" might be a better way to put it ![]() |
