Re: Some website feedback

If I can't excite my own family and friends about this

What have you tried? I managed to get enough enthusiam in my collegue that he did at least look at the site.... but then the site let me (and itself) down....

Don't you think it would be easier if you had a website you could refer back to that helped build upon your enthusiasm ?

To get the virtuous circle going it needs....

Enthusiastic user -> Tells stranger -> stranger looks at website -> website captures strangers imagination -> website builds strangers enthusiasm -> stranger downloads software -> stranger tells next stranger -> and so on....

Unfortunately, the website is breaking the chain!!! It's dry. It's boring. It completely fails to build any enthusiasm in a new visitor, before they get bored and go elsewhere.

The website needs to enthuse and build momentum. It needs to be exciting. It needs to get across quickly and clearly just what the potential of the grid is!!

A cure for cancer for crying out loud!!!

As possibilities go they don't come much bigger than that!!! ... but read the website and that does not come across!!!!!!!!!!

And not only that, but a cure for cancer that EVERYONE working together can help make a reality!!!!

Searching for drugs is just the first step!!! There's no reason why pre-clinical copmutations couldn't try to work out the likely side effects of drugs, not just their likely benefites.... how they might interact with normal cells in the body etc.

The possiblities are endless!!!! For children in the 1900's space travel was the thing of dreams. Their inspiration.

Computational biology is the space race of the 21st century. A race in which everyone can be involved!!!! A race where those who lived the space race as spectators, can now be the pioneers.

A race where every childs contribution is a real contribution!!! A race to fire their dreams!!

A revolution in medical science. It's one small download for a man... but the next giant leap for mankind... a leap we can all make together! A leap above and beyond international boundaries, where everyone can work together..

That everybody can join together in a world-wide grid to combat disease and hunger. That their PC, insignificant as it may feel to them, is no different to the millions of others that it's coordinating with, to fight AIDS, or SARS, or DENGUE, or CANCER.

One vote as insignificant as it may feel, working together can topple governements!!! One PC as insignificant as it may feel, working together can topple CANCER!!! .... and AIDS.... . ... and DENGUE.... and so on.....

One grid available to all.... that you can contribute to right now and hardly notice... whose benefits extend worldwide.... constantly there,.... like a living entity..... supporting humanity....quietly working away.... a grid beyond even the wildest dreams of science fiction.... and it's a reality that you can be part of right now!!!!

You telling me it's not something people can get excited about?

Re: Some website feedback

You are right but ....you knew there would be a but

If people are searching for information about Cancer they should come across the World Community Grid on their travels and think that's a good idea - they will never see it on page 19

Getting the Meta Tags right would be a good start and the cross linking of all of those cancer research sites to and from the World Community Grid would pay dividends

So the drive should be to get the World Community Grid uppermost in all of those Cancer and HIV and Muscular Dystrophy and Malaria and Climate Change sites explaining to them what we are about and could they link to our site to encourage more people to sign up (Having already made that front page nice and friendly informative and easy to understand - most importantly welcoming)

And then setting up partnerships with each of these interest groups to link back to their sites

Make the podcast get on Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Shoutlife et al. Have a video tutorial on how to install the great number crunching application and get the Scientists to make a video about what the results will mean to their area of science. Get the lot on YouTube

You never know you might gain another project out of it

In the recent PS3 foldng@home news how depressing that the BBC chose to put a link to the defunct grid.org instead of the WCG. That's how well we are doing with the publicity

Re: Some website feedback

There's the strapline right there

It's one small download for a man... but the next giant leap for mankind

I'm Loving it

I will add it to the simplified front pages

Re: Some website feedback

We are the second project listed here. That's encouraging.

Our 3 year anniversary is noted:

http://boincstats.com/

This is sad.
<meta name="Description" content="World Community Grid"/>
<meta name="Abstract" content="World Community Grid"/>
<meta name="Keywords" content="World Community Grid, Technology Solving Problems"/>

Yes, google page 19 is waaaaay down there. "Texas Precancel Club" occupies all of page 1 for my other specialized site.

On the other hand, I doubt whether new folks would search for "grid community" or "technology solving problems" to find a project for their computers.

IBM should put some generic things like

grid computing cancer dengue fever Aids HIV African Climate

in those HTML metawords.

The webmaster could apply for webawards to build up some links, but that takes a lot of time and the smaller webaward sites come and go. I've been #9 in the world for awhile, with 1799 awards. That's just me going for it, since I don't have the resources of IBM to help. Think what could be done.

Re: Some website feedback

Hi tresjolie. It really struck me that you might like to join some of our fellow crunchers in making your own website to promote WCG. Have a look at this one for example: http://home.alltel.net/billvelek/wcg.html

I know some of my team have linked to this on their own websites. :)

There are MySpace pages by members such as this one: http://www.myspace.com/worldgrid

I am gathering the info to make a ShoutLife page totally promoting WCG. I am learning HTML just so I can do this. That's what I'm working on. biggrin

peace

Hi Diana, Tresjolie, and the rest of the Grid Gang:
Truely a great series of threads where every comment is really correct even standing alone. Could be that what we need are several different pages out in the Web "what I call back doors" each page adjusted so as to reach a specific targeted audience. For instance the food service people: a web page with a couple of recipts for cooking and a pointer to "while the oven is cooling off -- check out this "Cook Book" for world dominance -- cooks unite !! (WCG)" blab blab "a secret for good bread" bla blab, etc.....for computer Geeks: Check out this multiuser cookbook on virtual machines in tandum... short programing on BOINC.....hello WCG., etc

Intice them in and then have them become members. If you can't beat'm join'm !

BTW: Diana that VIdeo seems to be dead on ...home.alltel.net....also my quote has an unintented error in it (??).

How about this idea ??

Hi again Diana:
Just checked out the video and it's back up again. I must have hit it during some kind-a update or so.
PaulT -- DNA terminology is really confusing along with the recent changes.

Re: Some website feedback

Draft 1

http://www.wcgwiki.org/research.cfm

I'm going to get hold of 2 url's one for Mac's and one for PC's

The volunteer and years of crunching should change every morning at 3am UTC to keep it current

Once I have the domain names I'll get the web submissions started

any further suggestions for meta tags and slicker content appreciated
