Re: Some website feedback

Perhaps the rest are under the same misaprehension as my collegue, that WCG required you to change the way you use your computers.

I can imagine that corporations wouldn't be to quick to join if they thought they had to change their PC power on policy, or change the way their users worked.

tresjolie, corporations do have to consider these things. What is a negligible effect for the average user adds up to an awful lot for a large corporation.

Many corporate networks are already powered on 24/7, so that updates and policy changes can be pushed to the computers, and virus scans and backups can be done while the computers are not in use. Running at 100% 24/7 has an impact in terms of power, reliability and availability. This is why WCG have introduced the throttle (60%) feature, and the "stop when user is inactive" power saving feature.

So, there is a lot that needs careful consideration. This isn't a trivial decision for corporations and gov/edu/ngo institutions. It does cost them real money. It also provides a great benefit, both in terms of corporate relationships and publicity, and hopefully they can find a way to write off some of the costs as a charitable donation (tricky, since WCG isn't a charity).

Re: Some website feedback

Are you really telling me that people couldn't be made enthusiastic about this on a big scale.... really telling that you believe that!!!!

We've been trying for years. It is exceedingly difficult. So, while your suggestions are welcome, I hope you can understand why I'm a little cynical about them.

If I can't excite my own family and friends about this, what hope do we have with total strangers?

Re: Some website feedback

Yes we've been trying for years to get IBM to change it's attitude towards publicity for this project and I'm more than a little bit cynical as to why more isn't being done

I'm not cynical at all that it isn't possible with enough drive in the marketing area

This is a great project and a great resource. That is doing good things hopefully for a lot of people that should improve the quality of life for millions. Millions who suffer every day including today.

Now tell me you couldn't get people to sign up to that

Re: Some website feedback

People suck.

The level of disinterest I've encountered is truly depressing.

I'm not going to blame WCG merely because it's the easy option. I know you're disillusioned, David, but - if you will forgive a cliché - it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.

Every day we make more progress.

And as my wonderful team mates together contribute over 1% of WCG's total output - I must be doing something right! :-p

Re: Some website feedback

D I know you probably think that SEO is bunk too but how about giving that front page some thought when the words are chosen. Notice that Google didn't even find Cancer Research side by side on the front page or wherever it spidered.

Now I have to say that I Dave Autumns caused Google to stop spidering the forum through one of my early IBM campaigns as I don't think this kind of discussion should water down the effect of the front page and IBM promised us to protect our identity in their license agreement. Spurious Forum chat amongst the search engine listings is far from ideal but 3 years later in some ways I wish I hadn't as page 19 is hardly where we belong

I shouldn't have to but sadly still that is all I can do

I put together the spread the word campaign I got MyOnlineTeam off the ground I champion the cause of The Christian Team and I'm a pain in the side of the Nobel Prize winning Climate Change crew wink . Check out the Logo at the bottom of this page http://www.myonlineworship.org We managed to get the World Community Link on the NFCR Website. I try on every contract to get the WCG on the local PC's. My current contract is with a company that use IBM laptops (Lenovo) and are contracted out to IBM for all their IT requirements now if I (working alongside the IT security Crew every day) can't get these guys to run the screen saver what chance is there. Marks and Spencer another case in point IBM laptops as far as you could see, ethical retailer. IT security crew - not a chance. My sister runs it, my Mitel buddies run it some of my friends at church run it. I can bore for England about the WCG (Worse even than about MMGW)

This project really is that important to me

3 years shouting in that darkness I will keep on going to make a difference

Dave

Re: Some website feedback

Regrets? :-p

If life has taught me anything, it is that what we think are great ideas sometimes aren't, or don't have the effect we hoped.

Take my nifty ideas for promoting my team, for example - some of my favourite and most nifty ideas barely had any effect at all, but features added as an afterthought were hugely popular. Swings, roundabouts....

And you can't fool Google. Google's rankings don't depend much on the actual page content - as you know, it's all about the links. And there is a lot of other cancer research stuff out there to take the spotlight off WCG. And I'm sure most of the sites are equally worthy research efforts.

Fortunately, I strongly doubt that anyone tries to find WCG by searching for "cancer research" in Google - so from that point of view your test is artificial. "Grid Community" puts us right at the top, as do many other relevant searches.
