hi GM
----------------------------------------nowt wrong wit ' Tor bay Great aunt Maud lived in Paignton with Great Uncle Herbert and ran a B& B What a great cook she was , cast in the mould of Mrs Bridges Table groaning with cooked meats and home made pies and scrummy trifles And that was just breakfast She thought little skinny me needed feeding up I remember trips to Brixham. and seeing Stonehenge on the way down from Kent on the bus . Abide with me was written there (brixham not SHenge) don't recall much else apart from the grub. My first fresh sea food prawns shrimps cockle's and "proper" fish. Rick Stein's dad was still catching Gudgeon and Roach .Sea food restaurant's were fish and chip shops more wet fish shops then as well Rock salmon or Robin Hus was good no bones........... Herring, Sprats, Mackerel and whitebait... We find now are oily fish and "good" for us Did Mum No best or what / Cream teas and such like were a meal to remember Question do folks still have great Aunties and so on ??? I had loads, all rather sturdy or stately . Some as I said like homely food producers or Statuesque like Queen Mary Some of them maiden aunts, maybe due to the wars depriving them of spouses when you look back the wars shaped our present quite considerably Fraid the spice girls didn't really know what girl power was all about I think My aunties did tho they just didn't sing and dance about it Gawd bless em.......... 'Polagise for wandering down memory lane ---------------------------------------- [Edit 3 times, last edit by densnaps at May 7, 2008 4:35:47 PM] |

Den no apologies needed, thanks for sharing your memories, one can't turn the clock back but we can reflect on on what has gone, It's a shame that society does not learn the lessons of our past and use them for a better future.
Have a lovely evening all ![]() Old Sage |

Evening all
Another summer like day. Had an organized walk in the East End, partly linked to the effect of WWII and the bombing but also the history with the Huguenots and their silk production followed by the Jewish and their sweat shops. It's a reminder that London has always developed by immigration. The Huguenots, escaping persecution in France settled and built their own church, as they moved West and the European Jews arrived this became a Synagogue. Now it's a Mosque. I'm not sure what the next transformation will be. |
