Thanks for the update and explanation of how these WU's work Kevin
![]() Wonder who's going to show-off the first with the new ![]() Anyone who can make out what it represents.... a Rice corn of sorts? Ha ha and my machine will do them as fast as the fastest overclocked crunching monster ![]() Keep those CPU's humming and those fans from bumming! bumming fans??? ![]() ![]() ![]() It probably won't be any of my alter-egos Sek - have around 2 days of HCC work to get through yet ![]() Yep, looks like an 'ear' of rice to me ![]() |

The big quorum sucks though ... I'll get the points for them next month. ![]() ![]() Well how ever it vacuums, the WCG stats are that on average > 90% will have their points within completion of the 4th day of initial distribution. Opposed to HPF2 you will though not know how many Units of Data are being completed, therefore cannot anticipate the points. I come to 21 counting all btw ![]() @knreed, just to confirm with the point award after first 14 returned valid, WCG/scientists still need all 19 to maximize the data diversity? Any task in error will be replicated to the next available host.

Path7, We have a script running that is updating everyone's project preferences to select the project. You can do it manually by going to your "My Projects" page, but everyone will have the project selected by default when the script finishes. -Uplinger Hello Uplinger, Thanks for the update, this will have more people quickly joining this new project. Have a nice day, Path7. |

@knreed, just to confirm with the point award after first 14 returned valid, WCG/scientists still need all 19 to maximize the data diversity? Any task in error will be replicated to the next available host. Actually what we need is about 110,000 - 120,000 structure predictions per gene. Each gene has been broken down into 25 workunits. This means that across a gene we need about 4,800 structures per workunit. Based on the preliminary data from the beta tests, we will be able to meet that goal with replication of 19 and min quorum of 14. As we see what the full set of computers on the grid produce we will refine these settings. |

timetunnel wrote: Who will own the resulting rice seeds / organisms? Will they be patented? Will the farmers be as free to use the new rice species as they have been with traditional rice species? Hi timetunnel, This question comes back each and every project and is, In General and Clear Terms, encapsulated in the WCG mission statement that you can read on the About Us page cheers Hello Sekerob, disagreeable to hear this is not a sufficient answer. As you see searching the institute website of the "Research Participants" in here, there seems to be an according institute in http://bioverse.compbio.washington.edu/ which is practising genetic engineering (see summary): "A key paradigm in the Bioverse framework is to use sensitive homology detection based on sequence, structure and function to transfer information across organisms. (...) Since our Bioverse is not complete, i.e., we don't have all sequences encoded by all organismal genomes, to facilitate the internal cross-linking we have also created special databases consisting of sequences with particular properties (for examples, sequences with known three-dimensional structures, sequences in SWISS-PROT, etc.). Special biologically interesting collections will be provided." Just an accidental neighborhood ? I would like to know: are the results from the new project (1) made for this purpose or possible (2) available like a waste-product for further use (patents) in the Bioverse-Department/Institute ? If so and i don´t want to hope for that, this is the backdoor for genetic engineering abusing a community with humanitarian requirements for commercial goals. Referring About us : "As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community." Agreeing this assurance in view of the "Nutritious Rice for the World"-project does not mean the questions from timetunnel are answered. In short: Does our crunching generate the basis for later patents ? Perhaps one ot the Group Members of the project is able to resolve all doubts in this direction by statement in these questions. So we can start crunching without pangs of conscience. Thanks for listening, no offense meant! @X1900AIW:
----------------------------------------Information that is public domain can not be made unavailable by patent claims. In fact, patents on already public informations are illegal (this concerns US law as well as european laws). If someone reads these informations and they inspire him to develop anything new out of this, he may register this newly developed good for a patent under certain circumstances. But the information is - once public domain - always public domain. So if we find a sort of rice that will grow on rock, live at a temperature from -30°C to +30°C then nobody can claim a patent on this sort of rice, because the information is already published. If he improves this sort to grow in vacuum and under temperatures from -60°C to +120°C, he will be free to try to get a patent on the improved sort. ![]() Everythin AFAIK ![]() ![]() |

Anybody have any idea how long this project intends to run? It doesn't seem quite as complex as the AIDS or cancer projects, so I'm assuming a shorter overall run time.

Hi Ram,
----------------------------------------great see new project like that here...in the last weeks we especulated a lot across the forruns, specially in Beta testingt forum, about what means this new project and what it benefits and possibilities. I am happy to see that the new one just came.. and I'm start crunch it as preferred one bsides my others. Rice is one of my favourites food... mainly if mixed with some delicious like onions, mushroons, chicken, shirimps, and so on... Hope that your effort in this project produce good results for the humanity ! Thank you for your confidence in WCG crunchers to help this project. For sure, we will do our best. Regards. ![]()
Cheers ! GIB@
