Jethro, There is no dilution of a project. WCG controls how many work units of each project get sent out. So, if you and 1,000 of your friends all selected Cancer, and only Cancer, the then there would be less Cancer work units sent to other machines. The over all amount of work per day alocated to Cancer remains the same. If you and your 1,000 friend then decided to switch to FAAH, there would be no effect, at all on the daily number of Cancer work units sent out. The work would just shift to different machines. I used to crunch just Cancer projects for personal reasons, but once I learned how work was doled out, I turned everything on. Edit: Didactylos beat me to it. I need a typing tutor. ![]() I belive there is still reason to select a a single project. Like you I choose Cancer for personal reasons. In this way I am voting for the type of project I want to see worked on the most. That being said I am also an Eagle Scout and have to get the badge before unchecking this project! ![]()

Now, this is interesting information. I, too, picked the cancer project for personal reasons and it seems my input is meaningless. It's like the scam the United Way pulls on people that object to funding certain charities. They pretend your money is going to projects you support, but in reality, they take money out of the project for "balance." So, you end up supporting things you oppose. Luckily, there is nothing objectionable here.
I don't crunch here for "points." (and that's one reason I rarely post) I want to see a breakthrough in cancer treatment. But, if I'm dedicating my electric bills to one ten-millionth of the cpu cycles going into this research, then my contribution is truly meaningless. It is also unfair to any individual that has a project important to them to have their contribution diluted with other projects. The more projects you take on, the less attention the desired project gets. Why even announce what projects WCG is working on? What is the incentive to join if it adds nothing significant to the project you care about? As to only posting complaints (see my remark about pointless points, above), I am reminded of the apocryphal story of Einstein who didn't speak until he was six years old. That morning he came down to breakfast and said to his mother: "These pancakes stink!" Surprised and startled, she asked: "If you could speak, why haven't you said anything before this???" He replied "Up until now, the pancakes were ok." BTW, I have literally thousands of posts at a couple of other forums and I rarely rant and I never flame. |

WCG are completely up-front about how it works. Feel free to read the FAQs.
The incentive to join in simple: you help your preferred project complete. The actual timescale is agreed by WCG and the project scientists, based on the load on the grid, and the amount of work the scientists want to run. But nothing would get done at all without the volunteers. WCG don't "dilute" your project. They are growing the size of the grid, and that means they can support more projects simultaneously. A bigger cake, rather than a bigger slice of a small cake. Everybody wins. |

Hi Gort!
----------------------------------------There are different ways to consider this question. Personally I prefer the optimistic one which I have often given, e.g. to members disappointed that their machine does not fulfill the requirements for their preferred project. Give it the WUs that it crunches best, and think that for every WU you will return for this project that will be one less to distribute to the "balanced" set of WCG members. So they will receive more of the project you prefer. By the way this new "Rice" project is becoming my recommendation for all small and/or slow machines because 1. it now has the smallest RAM requirement (from 9 to less than 24 MB for slower machines) 2. it never lasts longer than 8 hours CPU 3. it has very frequent checkpoints, thus losing minimum work between sessions 4. with its 10-day deadline it requires only one hour of CPU time per day. Cheers. Jean. |
