What, do you still pay more than 1 dollar for 1 euro? devilishdevilish

Yep Baron, the current administration has kept the dollar lower than a snakes belly so we can sell our "stuff" to you. Trouble is we don't make anything here anymore except weapons and lawyers. laughing biggrin laughing

USA markets just opened ... not looking very good. sad Unemployment rate is now 6.1% and that's just the people who have not given up looking for a job.

Good morning MOT! 100F again today. Hopefully by Sunday (95F)I can turn all of them on again. smile

EDIT:The Foundation for Computational Learning and Science is performing a survey of BOINC users. The survey asks BOINC client users about their demographic data, level of education, income, project participation, level of interest, suggestions for improvement, and technical data related to their computers running BOINC.

From a strictly economic perspective, anywhere from 3-7% unemployment is considered to be basically no unimployment. This number takes into account two types of people that we're not necessarily using the data to pick out. For example, if a fantastically wealthy person quits his job and waits a few months before choosing his next job, he shows up on unemployment. Also, there is a certain percentage of people in this country who are not capable of having a job, or strictly do not want to work. When the numbers hit double digits, that's when an economy is swirling around the edge of the tank waiting to be flushed.

Actually, you're already getting credit for it. biggrin They use a "trickle-up" message to get your progress on a WU and give you credit for that. There must be something going around. TANPAKU crashed back around middle of last month. They are still DOA but they at least have a generic message on the website (it's the whole website too). Spinhenge was hosed. Cosmology is semi-whacked while they overhaul the project/site (finally an end to the "beta"???). Maybe one of these years, Proteins will finally have some work. Academia-run projects are certainly different. devilish wink

Edit: Oh and next time someone wants to complain about the PV jail here, I still have a Lattice WU waiting to validate that I finished six weeks ago.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 29 smilesmile

Good to meet you - I'm John, obviously.

Good to meet you too, although I think you've introduced yourself a couple of times now wink. I'm Marc, an Australian university student studying computer science and computer forensics, if that rings any bells. smile

The Nehalem chips will cost you quite a bit. They require DDR3 RAM and coolers for them aren't out yet. The stock coolers won't take crunch heat well.

The Nehalam/i7 system cost isn't a big concern (i've been saving for a while..). It'll be more how reliable (seeing as they'll be the early models) and if they're sufficiently available on the market here (motherboard/cpu etc) by the end of the year, thats my main concern. I desperately need the upgrade (i'm pushing the P4 to its limits daily), but can't justify (as tempting as it is) adding a newer temporary computer until i7 is mainstream.

I hope this work out for you. The new stuff usually goes into the high-end machines first - so it seems. Up here, you have your "economy" machines - usually under $900, your mid-range machines that have the reliable versions of the good stuff from several months ago - usually $900-1700, and then high end machines with the latest hot stuff. When the i7's hit, have to expect a few problems. Question will be how serious. You may want to see about two quads instead - just to work the numbers. Still, it always seems to drop fast so a short wait of a couple of months could make a big difference. Aside from crunching and games, I don't know that there's that much out there that really takes advantage of these multiple cores. XP sure doesn't and I doubt Vista's much different. Here I am a year later getting a quad that is slightly faster than my C2D for basically the same price. Most folks wouldn't notice a difference between a single core and a quad but then surfing and e-mail don't push a system anyway. When some of the architectural changes that I hear of come out, then folks will see a difference. I'm starting to see solid drives working their way into mainstream machines now. I/O has always been painfully slow relative to the rest of the machine. Solids will be as fast as memory. As always, waiting will get you better cheaper but you just have to draw aline in the sand at some point and buy.
