And don't forget MOT's activity on other DC projects....

Yep, we have a rather diverse presence in the DC world. As much as I want to get new folks added there, I don't want to do it at our expense here. Still, if anyone should find themselves with a bit of wanderlust or a dash of burnout here, it's an easy way to have a change of pace/scenery yet stay with MOT too.

Hey Blueprint

What is your experience with the i7 920. How many WUs are you running at a time? I am curious to know what kind it is/where you got it and anything else about it.

Thanks in advance; your answers could cut down on the amout of expereimentation I will have to do.

Thanks to all here at MOT.

It can do 8 WU's simultaneously without a problem, but it heats up like crazy. When maxed out (8 cores crunching) it reaches and exceeds 85 degrees Celsius fast. Theres no noticeable performance loss with other programs, but running the processor that hot can't be good, especially for long periods.

At 6, the cores hit around 65-75.. and at 4 they perform somewhere around 45-65; but it all depends how much else your doing, those temperatures were assuming just casual use/web browsing/etc. I can play new games on highest settings, video render, etc etc without any noticeable lag whilst crunching, which is great also.

As for results.. I haven't properly tested that yet. But I've been heavily crunching Nutritious rice for the gold badge (so the work unit count isn't that high); the machine has been only on about 12-14 hours a day so far; and nearly half the results returned are still pending. I'm assuming these are why I haven't had a big spike in my daily results..

When do you get your i7 920?

Wow, sounds like the i7 needs aftermarket cooling BAD! Are there any coolers out there that can handle that kind of heat that are compatible with the i7.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 31 smilesmile

Thanks for the info on the I7. Is it a homebuilt? Hum...I need to be careful on the cooling. I ordered a Dell I7 920 so I will have to watch it carefully. Johathan... ExtremeTech used the ASUS Triton 81 for overclocking the I7. They took one to 3.8/3.99Ghz. They had a powersupply in that puppy that was 1100w. Overclocking article is here http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2335836,00.asp

I am not willing to push mine nearly that hard but will probably tinker with the OC a little.

Again Blueprint, thanks for the info. Can't wait to get my grubby paws on the thing. It had a long ship time on it when I bought it. Dell says Dec 15 ship date but they usually beat their ship estimates. Of course, I am hoping for tomorrow

OCing is ballsy on a new machine like that. I have no idea how the i7 is going to respond to ocing (the q6600 was abnormally easy to overclock). Also, if you have a Dell, they probably locked the multiplier so you cannot overclock. I would wait and let a few other people wreck their CPUs so you can learn from their mistakes instead of making your own.

I've been looking at a few Noctura's but they'd need to be imported from the other side of Australia. Thats not a big problem, its just finding them.. But its likely not many coolers will have been designed for all eight cores or most cores to be at 100%..

Is it a homebuilt?

Yeah its homebuilt.

As far as I know, OCing is much easier and apparently safer on the i7's, but I agree, it is alot of money to risk. It has a huge amount of processing power at stock, so theres in my opinion no need to O/C.

RT, Marc, have a look at http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=207028

It's all greek to me but supposedly some guy has an i7 920 running 4.5GHz with Tunig Tower air cooling. Maybe you'll find some useful info there???
