When I started my first device end 2008 I already standardized the first platforms with X58 Chipset. Finally this was a wise choice. Now I just have just to switch the CPU.
----------------------------------------It takes about twenty minutes to do. I know that the loss of points due to this interruption is unacceptable for some of you but I will probably shorten that time by practicing. On the longer term I have 11 machines that can be upgraded. By that time I should be able to do it in 10 minutes or even less, by optimizing the movements and action sequence, positioning of the tools and components and breathing and muscle control. I am doing yoga training for that. No I am not serious here. Fool's day today ![]() Switch the chip and get 70% power boost. The only cost is the CPU cost. Not negligible but can be spread over time. In between the machines continue crunching. The theoretical maximum of my planetary system is 11 machines with 980X at 4.00 Ghz. That is 550'000 ppd. More than half a million point per day. WoW! ![]() ![]() |

Myself, I prefer more cores per machine than more machines. Currently have 2 octo harpertown machines crunching away. Socket 1366 mobo's seems to be staying around for awhile. I almost pulled the trigger on microcenter's sale on the 980's but decided to wait for the xeon counter part. Am hoping for intel to drop the prices on these since AMD rolled out there 12 core chips. I prefer a dually setup so one machine with 24 total cores crunching is what I am aiming for. Intel's 8 core chip is way out of my reach.

I had to decide what was the right compromise, between: cost, physical space, energy consumption, volume of work produced etc.. I think I reached an acceptable optimum, except again the personal pleasure of building a particular machine. No time for that at the moment. Btw real special rig would be a dual socket 32 core machine with two of the new Intel octocores. But that is really too expensive if there is no other business related use to justify the investment. ![]() |

A 32 core rig would be sweet. Way out of my price range. Looking at the price of the 6 shooters, might have to rethink my plan as even a low ghz one is at least a grand. Started looking at the octo westmere chips. Newegg has a E5630 for 599.00. Want to stay with 32nm chips. Maybe if I wait a little, the 6 core chips will drop since AMD came out swinging with the 12 core chips. Am in no hurry so maybe by fall, the prices drop if I am lucky.

Bearcat the prices will drop. I have already seen the 980X price drop twice in a month. The pressure coming from AMD will have an impact.

I hope they do. Figure if I get 32nm octo chips and the right board, I can swap them out for hex core when those prices drop into my price range. Looks like next year we will see even bigger multi core chips. AMD will drop to 32nm and sandy bridge should be out. Now if only the software would catch up.

There's an old expression that when two reasonable people sit down to discuss a problem all things are doable.
----------------------------------------B.Boverman and myself had a interesting conversation where we both stated our views and came to what I'd call a happy medium and the issue is settled as far as I'm concerned and I'd like to say Thanks Bill for keeping an open mind on this issue. ![]() |

machine started on the project on March 19th.
----------------------------------------Even with a lot of interuptions for benching, testing, etc I'm now closing in on 2 million WCG points. Machine is on the HCC project and doing 24 WU every 95 minutes running at 4152MHz.. ![]() |

Glad to see you back, and I'm happy that you were able to reach an amicable solution.
