Re: Badge for participation

Posters send on a guilt trip. 16 No Contribution badges... the white one with a cross through

All of these badges, one for each project, would be awarded when you sign up. All crunchers would immediately have 16 badges before they complete their first WU. When a new project is announced, all crunchers, active, alive or not, would receive the new badge, thereby assuring all crunchers have the same number of badges at all times.

It seems to me this thread is more about existing users unhappy they don't have the full compliment of badges, than it is about newbies. I crunched some HPF1 WUs, but not enough to get bronze. C'est la vie.

To some perhaps?
Remember I dont want a badge system at all, and a Time based system seems the least fair way; I would prefer a points based badge system, and one that moves with the averagae CPU (you know the law). Presently 1 years worth of an Atom330 (with 4 threads) equates to a Q9650 when it comes to badges! In terms of points, most single cored CPUs would outperform an Atom330, never mind the Atom 270N.
As I said before there are lots of new processors on the horizon that will be multithreaded with lots of low powered cores. Even the i3 and i5 CPUs use HT and do not outperform top end previous generation systems with the same cores but half the threads (but they will get twice the badges).

Anyway, I suggested shorter badges to facilitate more inclusiveness - newbies. I also suggested longer badges to encourage those presently disgruntled heavy crunchers that have blue badges and well over 2 years worth of time on that project. I suggested 1000years as I know several crunchers with over 100years and at least one that has about 1000years for several badges! This would of course also futureproof the system against the increase in core/thread count. That said, the 14days mark is already fairly easy for most to attain, and will increasingly become so (with more multicores).

Do you think a newbie would embarrass themselves so much by asking for a freebie badge they haven't earned? No.

Re: Badge for participation

I dont think esoteric17 was referring to newbies?
No-one else mentioned newbies embarrassing themselves or asking for free badges, only you, again and again!

So its the crunchers who already have badges that are asking for freebies? Crunchers who have a badge in one project and want a badge for 1 WU in a different project? Bad idea.
only you, again and again!
Please show me a quote of any post where I have requested a freebie badge. You are going to have to make it up.

Re: Badge for participation

Just to re-summarize, the colorless / odorless badge as I quizzed into many moons ago in response of a 1 WU contribution discussion:

1. We have badges from 14 days through 2 years, several more coming (read of 2, but that could have been dropped too as idea)

and

2. Could have certificates that are scaled in concept from 1 month, 2 months, 5 months, year, 2 years, 5 years, ... 5000 years as a final level that as yet no one has achieved [post knreed http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...d,26221_offset,30#259294].

The levels of certificate [for total contribution], might hint at what the additional badge levels could be, if ever they arrive. From what I know of the immediacy needs, as in back-end work on servers, upgrading, project development work, fear it's been moved off into that slob time segment... maybe next quarter.

So as we wander off in the hypothetical who said what when and how into the agitation because one did not say or intend to say it the way it came out or was perceived, I'm just going to sit back and see it when it comes... in vectorized graphics maybe so it will look brilliant no matter what size zoomed into on the hi-re display. And if it does not, that's fine with me too. The candy no matter how sweet or bitter will not change my crunching effort.

Re: Badge for participation

My suggestions to be more inclusive are shot down, I have no new badge to crunch towards, my electric bill is huge, my computer system bill is massive, and I cant have a meaningless 4year/5year badge to keep me happy!
It is not a case of sweet or bitter; there is no candy!
Higher year badges are proposed now and then for crunching farms. It may be a matter of priority, since projects themselves must be juggled first.

IBM hasn't said yes and hasn't said no. Badge thoughts are down there in the queue somewhere.

Re: Badge for participation

Maybe with an added number: crunched ... days short of getting the next level badge. Add shame to guilt. biggrin

I rather like the idea of a white box with the amount of time short... although, I'm thinking the number should be negative tongue
