Re: The Clean Energy Project, Phase 2: Welcome all!

I wish i had more computers. I'd do live boots and help out more. Right now my only 2 computers are on native Linux working on this project exclusively. I bet this project will zoom once windows and mac are supported.

As of now we have 16 years runtime on this project. Other fully supported projects get about 50 years a day. Since this is opt in only, we won't get that many but I believe this is a smaller project. So crunch away and spread the word.

I recommend going exclusive to this project because clean energy is urgent and will benefit every last human on the Earth.

Re: The Clean Energy Project, Phase 2: Welcome all!

As the participation increases, so does the PV jail population. 17 in there now, and each good for 3.5 hours plus. Could also be part of the wingman uploads having hit the now familiar part 4 snag... we peaked at 9500 validated results last Saturday and yesterday 'just' had 5600.

Silver will come, Gold will come... loads of work to crunch... no it is not 'smaller'. Once we have a batch count and offset that against the initial time contributed, we might be able to give the time it takes a stab. With explicit opt-in it not likely to reach the equivalent share to the other full production sciences at WCG... still getting 70%+ on my 3 way mix quad of CEP2 work, so the weighting has been set to make sure the project gets some lift.

edit: Not heard if WCG will circulate a mail when windows has launched, but I do hope, to past and present members they do when the application & distribution system shows to perform to satisfaction.

edit2: spelling.

Surely, if 'Subscribe to new projects' option is ticked, Windows machines will automatically pick up the new project and there should be no need for a new e-mail for this?

Or is it better to keep checking to see if a Windows release has been made?

But they ignored this setting so that Windoze boxes wouldn't kill the servers asking for work from a Unix only project.

I don't think it is possible for them to now (now= windows release, whenever it is) apply it because there isn't a 'blank slate' to work from. Some will have opted in, some opted out and some not noticed!

No, CEP2 is an express opt-in, not listening to the "Sign me up Automatically for new projects", as per the introductory publications on the forums and WCG Research news.

The anticipated date has been announced, so check back after July 17 would be my suggestion.

Edit: Set up some RSS feed links or Watch this forum notifiers to the key forums and you will get auto-info'd of any developments.

Re: The Clean Energy Project, Phase 2: Welcome all!

Thanks for the reply, guys! I am sorry for having overlooked the introductory message about this project requiring an express opt-in.

I will continue to check back for updates and won't add this project to my list until I see that it is ready for Windows machines.

Once again, many thanks for having answered my question so succinctly :)

Any harm in opting in to the project now, even though I only have Windows machines? The server is smart enough to only give work units to Linux boxes, isn't it? That way I can start processing whenever WUs become available.

Re: The Clean Energy Project, Phase 2: Welcome all!

In case someone didn't know. You can install Linux on any storage. Flash drives, sd cards, whatever. Install it on the flash drive and you can boot to it from any computer that can boot to usb. The whole os can be self contained on the flash drive. It won't mess with your windows boot thing.

You can also use this http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/#download to create a live usb, which means that you can run a live session and install boinc and when you shut down, nothing is changed. You can also use the live usb to install linux on a computer (just like a live cd).

The easiest distro to run Boinc on is Ubuntu. You don't have to do any commands, just search for boinc in the Ubuntu software center.
