adrianxw,
----------------------------------------From past observing it shows that memory is dynamic, at least peak use is higher than current by varying margins. Similar it seems the swap file use is not reserved i.e. it goes up and down. In the case of CEP2, we don't see it on the surface in BOINC Manager, but when a checkpoint is made / saved to disk, a fresh process is started. Waiting for memory is strange even when BOINC is allowed to use 2GB, lest the use% and idle% are set too low. If set to for instance 50% during use and 4 CEP2 are running, then really BOINC will only use 1GB while you're doing input. Is your swap file permission large enough? Mine is set to allow up to 85% of 3.5GB.

The principle reason I ask is I am trying to establish a sensible quota on quad cores with 2GB RAM. I have seen "waiting for memory" a few times with the heavier Rosetta wu's for example. I do have a quad running cep2 exclusively, the boinc-tasks use about 1.5GB at most. Should work if you don't do much other stuff with the machine. |

Hello adrianxw,
2 GB and 4 cores is really constrained when dealing with projects that can run to a GB or even a little more. There is a reason that people are switching to a 64-bit OS standard now that quad-cores are available. They let people run more than a GB per core. 6 GB is a healthy minimum for RAM. 8 GB is more than a quad-core needs, though they try to sell it as a minimum. Lawrence |

Got it Patrick. I've now changed the home profile...
----------------------------------------But I've not seen an option to create a new device profile? Cheers, Frits.

There are four standard BOINC profiles that you can customize and affect to different devices or groups of similar devices. They are named Default, Home, School and Work.
----------------------------------------Creation of more profiles is possible (and it has been described in some threads of this forum) but it is totally not standard and thus it is unsupported. |

I look forward to helping with this as well. Hopefully the Windows version does come soon as I have some nice 6 core Nehalems giving me 8-9 months of work a day. Unfortunately I can only leave them on this course for about 8 more days.
