Re: Question

I was 10 plus hours into a task that showed as being 36% done and about an hour later I noticed that the agent had hopped online and was getting another task. I did get some points for the old task but, if it was at 36% after 10 hours, I’m thinking that it couldn’t have been completed at 11 hours. Does anybody have any insight on this behavior?

If you received points for this workunit, then a result was successfully sent back. There are three possibiliites for this:

1. Workunits are non-deterministic. Each workunit folds a protein n number of times. Each fold can be quick or take a very long time. So it might be quick to go to, say 30% and slow going to 40% then quick again, etc. I don't think this is the case howerver as going from 36% to 100% in an hour or two is rather quick, but not unheard of depending on how fast your hardware is and what it's being used for.

2. The workunit failed to converge. This has been discussed waaay back when the project first started. As mentioned in point 1 above, some folds can take a very long time to complete. If it takes too long to converge (and it tries for quite a while), we simply abort the workunit. You still get credit for what you've completed. I think this is the most likely scenario. The best way to determine this is to look at the percent complete on the graphics screen as it measures progress in tenths of a percent. If it sits at a specific percentage for say an hour or longer, it's likely not converging.

3. You hit the absolute timeout for the workunit, which is 3 weeks I believe. If you've had the same workunit for 3 weeks, it will abort. This could happen, e.g., if you routinely turn off your computer for periods of time. You would know if this happened, and I don't think this is the case either.

Steve --

Congratulations on the birth of your son! I hope that your wife and the baby are doing well. Might I suggest that you put one of your PC's running WCG in the baby's room. The "white noise" of the cooling fan should help him to sleep! biggrin

Your friend and team mate,

Congrats Steve! I'm real excited for you and your family. My 2 kids drive me crazy at times but I wouldn't trade them for the world. Hey, I like the "white noise" idea of the cooling fan. If you don't think that is a good enough reason for your wife, you could also add in a the idea of playing soft music from the PC to help him go to sleep... or maybe a colorful simple screen saver with geometric shapes that could be "educational". Oh the reasons I could think up if I had the time! idea

Well goodness sakes Congratulations Steve on your new baby--It seems that after all you did indeed did have an agenda. I do like the idea of putting a computer in the room for the soothing effect. G smile
