Re: Windows Launch still July 17th?

Thanks for all of the replies. Regarding resources available for crunching, I have four machines with 2 gig of RAM on the lap top I am using right now and 3 gig or more on all of the towers (I don't know why they call them desk tops other than you can't hold them on your lap), and the minimum size HDD is 90 gig for the lap top.

I have BOINC set up to use up to 10 gig of disk space. Are there any recommended changes to this setup for CEP2?

Re: Windows Launch still July 17th?

I was using Ubuntu via VirtualBox on 10GB virtual disk and it was not enough for the project (but it depends on your queue). When I redid the installation to 20GB it was running fine with 1 day of WUs waiting.

I can't wait to jump in into CEPP2 with all my 41.6GHz of crunching hamsters! Soon will finish my PhD on DSSCs development ;)

1) Install Linux or
2) Wait until CEP is available for Windows (just a few weeks)

Re: Windows Launch still July 17th?

ggdh, thank you. I have raised the amount of disk space for BOINC on the laptop to 20 gig - I wanted to make sure there was no problem doing this. I will get to the other machines later. Can you tell me what kind of feedback you get when you are short on space?

Re: Windows Launch still July 17th?

I stopped crunching TCEP2 some time ago because when running Ubuntu in VirtualBox my computer was very laggy (and i have X4@3600 so its rather fast). As far as i remember it was not possible to download new WUs.
Sorry, can't help you more :/

The problem might not be the speed of your system, but the amount of memory that's assigned to your VM. If it's too much this could choke you windows and apps running on it. So try to reduce the amount of memory for your VM and see if windows will run better.

The error-message is like this:

05.08.2010 22:39:59|World Community Grid|Message from server: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 needs 1086.37MB more disk space. You currently have 961.63 MB available and it needs 2048.00 MB.

Also, if not mis-reading ggdh, 10 GB shared between Ubuntu and BOINC data-directory wasn't enough, but it's maybe possible 10 GB is enough...

Hmm, worse-case, each CEP2-wu will use 2 GB then running, so if you adds an extra GB for the application and so on, and 2 GB to pre-download new wu's, a single-core would max need 5 GB, a dual-core 7 GB, a quad-core 11 GB, a hexa-core 15 GB, and an 8-way 19 GB.

Each wu-file is AFAIK negligible, so easily goes into the 1 GB, and you can cache-up multi-day. Only if you've got more than #cores partially-done wu's will you be in danger of exceeding these limits.

In practice the disk-usage will likely be lower, how much lower I've no idea, so don't know if even the 8-way will nicely fit in an 10 GB-disk-size, or if you'll need more.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 under VirtualBox on an AMD 1090T(6 core), I gave the VM 4 cores.

The host machine runs the VM at high priority(including Boinc).
