----------------------------------------I also finished my second run-a-smartphone-without-battery-for-WCG-crunching project and have thereby connected a Samsung Galaxy S3 into the mix as well. It's Quad-core chip and is just about to return its first four WU results in an hour or so. It's not much, but this challenge is based on runtime so four cores will certainly help some in that regard. I have not tried to run a smartphone without a battery. I have always been afraid of that since my first Android was bricked by due to shutting down too fast by a bad battery. I have a few with bad batteries I could press into service.Cheers ![]() ![]() |

First of all, thanks for joining in and for the shoutout in your forum signature! <3
----------------------------------------Most Android phones won't run without battery with just a USB lead attached unfortunately. The Galaxy S3 was easy - two battery connectors are NFC related and the other two are VCC and GND. So I simply soldered the power delivery wires of a USB lead to the according battery terminals on the phone side and now I can run it straigt out of a power bank or USB wall charger (or heck, even 4 NiMh AA cells or 3 Alkaline AA ones). My first phone I tried with a year ago or so was a Galaxy S Plus. It had three battery terminals: VCC, GND and a SENSOR. There one had to solder a resisitor between SENSOR and GND of some appropriate value (by trial-and-error) so that the phone would think that the battery has a normal temperature. 5V from USB will work, but I suppose a better solution is to use a DC-to-DC buck converter so that one can take some mains power adapter giving say 9-12V and connect it to the buck converter as input and then adjust the voltage of the converter output to 4.2-4.5V. It's great fun and rewarding to pick up an old phone that's been lying in a drawer for a long time and finally see it coming to some good use again! :) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

Round 1 of the Thor Challenge closed out with The International Team in position 21. The team was less than 16 days of CPU time away from making it into the top 20 and round 2. You were so close.
----------------------------------------![]() Puppy and I are heading back to SeriousCrunchers in Escher 1 where I had promised to be for a bit longer. ![]() Cheers ![]() ![]() |

Very, very close indeed. 21st place is exceptionally good by any means, so I am very happy still!

![]() 9 hours after it ended I still have ~50 days in pending which is a bit of a shame ... since we missed it by 16 days, this must be one of the famous English understatements, OldChap ![]() flodisar, I'm so sorry this did not pan out - not least for the Base Campers who really did their utmost. Had we joined you a bit earlier, much had looked different. This became an impromptu - whatever that means, but I like the word ... ![]() surprise trek. When this THOR Challenge rage is over Base Camp shall arrange for an old fashioned trek with one more badge. We'll call it The International Team 3.0. I cannot say when. ![]() |

No worries, we all did our best! :)
----------------------------------------It was great fun and I signed up for the October run-time challenge now - why not be in a challenge. This one runs for the entire month, just taking it easy on this one. Oooh, that's great news - trek 3.0! Looking forward to it! :) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |
