![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Man I envy you guys with those solar cells. I need to again check and see how much that would cost for our place. Seems YellowAV has been passing lots of milestones ![]() ![]() Oh dkt ... I guess I misrepresented the 71 cores. While under ideal conditions, I have 71 HCC Work Units running, 24 of them are running on hyper-threads on the various I7 chips. (860s, 920 and 2600K s) so there are only 47 real cores. And when I said I shut down 34 cores, there were only 18 real cores and the other 16 were hyper-threads. In other words, I had 4 I7s down as well as a dual core. Hopefully that clears it up. (as if anyone cares ![]() ![]() Everyone have a great day.!!! |

...I shut down 34 cores yesteday from 11:30AM to 7:30PM. Will do the same today. Such a shame ![]() Everyone have a great day. ![]() I know my parents reminded me that it would get over 100 and stay there for over a month, day and night. But that was in the humidity of Houston. So you shut down 34 cores -- how many total cores do you have running at any one time? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I still need that iced tea "smiley". OK well if everything is perfect (almost never), I have 71 cores running WCG. Some of these are on atom processors and some of them on overclocked I7/2600Ks. Congratulations David Autumns and dkt. Onward and upward. ok, so you shut down about half your cores. The question I still have is something you said "some of them on overclocked I7/2600Ks." I have not come across anything about overclocking CPUs and I am wondering how you accomplish that. I run with Norton and every once in a while I get a message about too much usage of the CPUs - it does not last long and it hasn't caused me any problems. I don't know if overclocking would increase that or if it is something entirely different. Thanks for the info. |

dkt: Overclocking is the process of running the CPU (and sometimes other components - usually memory and or graphics engines) at higher clock speeds. In the case of one of my I7/2600Ks I am running it at 3.9 GHz instead of the 3.4 GHz that is standard for that processor. To do this you have to play with several variables including voltage. Now, this used to be pretty much of a geek's geek arena.
----------------------------------------More recently, if you by a good motherboard to put the processor on, then there is a utility that comes with it that helps you overclock the processor by taking care of all the details. This is what I use. On the motherboards that I prefer (Gigabyte), the overclocking utility is named "EasyTune" Currently version 6. I use that utility to speed up the processor while at the same time looking at "CPUID" Hardware monitor and watching the temperatures of the cores on the processor. Typically the faster that you clock the processor, the hotter it will run. I use big heat-syncs on the processors so I can push them higher than one can using the stock CPU cooler. So I push it till I think that is too hot and then back off a few clicks to get it to what I am comfortable with. Each CPU is different, the latest one I did this with is the one I am typing this note on. It is Clocked at 3.9Ghz and runs 8 simultaneous HCC work units and does them in about 65 minutes each. In other words, I get over 7 HCC work units out of it each hour. Now, I am a Norton hater (well not hater but I don't like it), so I don't know what they are trying to tell you. But I would guess that they are saying that the CPU(s) are so busy you can expect to see some degradation in user interface performance...in other words the computer would appear slow. But that is just a guess. I don't think Norton would know or care about overclocking, and that they are merely looking at how busy the CPU(s) are (which makes little sense if you are running big multi-core processors with BOINC involved). So I would just ignore this Norton message. If I left anything out or someone knows my guess on Norton was wrong, then please chime in. |

If I left anything out or someone knows my guess on Norton was wrong, then please chime in.----You are correct about Norton and actually it could slow your computer along with costing a good amount of money--i use Comodo which is free and in my opinion better than Norton http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ They have a pay product and free--

@RT
----------------------------------------100% agree. Norton is beyond awful IMHO. Please don't get me started. ![]() . While "EasyTune and other OCing tools work they tend to way, and I mean way overvolt the CPU. Especially if you leave LLC enabled. I'd be willing to bet you could take your OC higher with the same and probably less voltage than you're using now and have it run cooler. 90%+ of 2600k CPUs can do 4.5 GHz easily on air with good cooling on 1.35v vcore or less. I have one that runs at 4.590GHz with 1.288v vcore at low 60c temps. I'd be more than willing to help you get more for less if you'd like. @GeraldRube See above for Norton comments. ![]()
