Main cruncher was "accidentally" turned off, probably by Norton operatives! Working on fixing to crunchers which are both OC'd at about 4.3+ but currently not producing! Should add 40K+ per day but taking longer to fix than expected. Been very busy lately! Seems that Intel and such are going through transition with what I expect to me more and more chips with bigger and bigger caches and more processors per VIP! Perhaps some new break through will allow faster speeds for the processors but will probably not be silicon. Very competitive so good for us, that is the making of faster processors but the next step may take a while as public has invested so much in current technology that to switch to new may be delayed until silicon has long out used it's usefulness. Cynical but probably true. Have a great day!

Pretty much just like junk snailmail. Also, supposedly, some viruses can be activated by opening the email. That may be an electronic "urban legend" but the few times my AV has notified me that it removed a virus from an email, I've immediately deleted the email and emptied my recycle bin. |

<snip> I suppose I get emails like this. If I don't recognize the sender or subject of an email, I don't even bother opening it. It goes straight to trash. Pretty much just like junk snailmail. Also, supposedly, some viruses can be activated by opening the email. That may be an electronic "urban legend" but the few times my AV has notified me that it removed a virus from an email, I've immediately deleted the email and emptied my recycle bin. Sadly enough, it's not an urban legend. Microsoft Outlook used to be very vulnerable to e-mail viruses, even when e-mail was only previewed. This has since been fixed (for some value of "fixed"). More generally, HTML e-mail made all of this a lot worse. JavaScript, etc., carried viruses used to infect a lot of systems and most of the major mail programs have had their problems at one time or another. Web based e-mail could sometimes take advantage of browser bugs (or "features") - and again MS led the pack with IE ActiveX problems allowing drive-by e-mail. Then there were also the problems with Windows where viruses could be embedded in images due to the way Windows processed to file (since fixed ... more than once). Now a lot of this could be prevented if ISPs would simply refuse to forward e-mail with forged headers. But that would take some small amount of effort. Back when e-mail readers were text only, you could not get a virus from just reading an e-mail. About the worst that could happen is someone could include non-printable characters (such as ASCII 7 that rang the bell on teletypes or caused the speaker to beep on most PCs). - D |
