Re: "The survivors"

even when windows xp expires.. you can still use it...

yeah, nasher, you're right. i plan to run it as long as possible.

the problem is support goes away, and it will become a target for the script kiddies to
attack, knowing there wont be any fixes coming along.

there is so much pent up demand for a new project - when it comes along everyone will be jumping on it! sad

Re: "The survivors"

grumpy,

I agree that Linux is a good choice over windoze.
My Dell 2400 is running XP and my thought was to go the Linux route.
Bought a processor upgrade to 3.06MHZ with hyper threading but have not made the switch.
If this was converted it would be used only for WCG so other software is not important on this PC.
Maybe a firewall and AV are needed, don't know.
Pretty safe behind a NAT Router and do NOT go to dangerous sites like poker or porn.

Have 4 PCs running W7 and could not consider moving them now.
Some of the existing software would have to have a Linux equal.

My cellphone runs Android Linux and it is rooted.
So it works pretty much like UNIX did.
Since Linux is basically rewritten UNIX I wouldn't expect much difficulty in getting it running on a desktop PC.
I will look into Linux MINT.
Thanks for the info.

Re: "The survivors"

nasher,

I agree about the new projects and interest in Cancer [and Childhood Cancer].
However, Aids is a good cause so will continue to run it until a new project begins.

Everything is going well except for my cell phone, which is taking a lot of errors.

There was a problem recently with the cell phone MicroSD card mounting and unmounting repeatedly.
I took that to mean the card was failing and needs replacement.
Removed the card and in the meantime lost it.
The phone runs okay without it as it has 16GB of internal memory.
Have not had a chance to buy a new card and verify that this is indeed the cause of the errors.
In the meantime I will remove and reinstall BOINC Android without the card installed to see if that helps.

Re: "The survivors"

Reinstalling BOINC Android fixed the problem when running on 2 cores.
However, when raised to 4 cores it failed.
Will have to wait for the new uSD card to see if that is the problem.

Re: "The survivors"

closing in on the blue earth slowly...but i am also wandering around a bit with 8 of my 18 cores so its a bit slower...

i am a survivor but i also think every project out there on boinc and such deserves a chance.

i don't use twitter so i don't have a team there....boincandroid doesn't seem to want to play with me for WCG but it seems to work for asteroids so i am running my mytouch 4g on that...

It takes forever to get anything on WCG.

i am a survivor but i also think every project out there on boinc and such deserves a chance.
Agreed but I am partial to cancer related projects.

The Twitter account is for the team with the purpose of gaining visibility for what we do with WCG.
I thought Twitter might help with finding new crunchers and team members--but so far I am wrong.
Most people are not tech savvy enough to get involved.

I tried AndroBOINC but had problems so I am now using the BOINC app [Space Sciences Laboratory U.C. Berkeley] and it runs but is taking errors on both devices.
Got the new uSDHC card and it does not help the problem.
