Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

I'm guessing it is a typo. The 7.x.x series is in testing phase right now, so I would guess that it is actually 6.10.58 .

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

I suppose it remains to be seen what will work but I have gx2's era cards and I have half a dozen 5870's that are at least a bit newer.

My experience of using gpu's like this was not great... can't afford to watercool them so it would be a winter only thing for me. The noise defines where these can run. GPU's break easily too so I would be thinking of attempting to undervolt some.

Cost of running is a factor, at least with multiple cards, as is providing good psu's to support them.

All in all, whilst I am interested in this new crunching, I am not entirely happy that this is the direction we seem to be going

If you wish to unload some of those 5870's let me know, they would be upgrades for me!

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

Betcha can't guess what day I got tired of three idle GPUs in three systems dedicated to WCG:

That difference is all Collatz Conjecture, all ATI (two 6870s, one 5770). Druther be crunchin' WCG on the GPUs...

(Edit: Yeah, each system is still crunchin' WCG at the same core count as they were before.)

At the risk of triggering a deluge of controversy, yes it looks really impressive. At least until you put it in perspective vs. how many credits collatz awards for comparable cycles and how valuable that project may or may not be.

That was supposed to provide a stimulus for more "valuable" projects to begin utilizing the capabilities of GPUs rather than serve as an invitation to trivialize my use of my GPUs - GPUs that I cannot use for anything WCG - to chase points. Mayhap that is why I observed that I would "druther be crunchin' WCG" and further observed that said numbers were attained without affecting WCG crunching (i.e., "each system is still crunchin' WCG at the same core count")?

When you look at the BOINC projects page the acronym GPU is conspicuously absent from all things WCG. That holds true for most science that is focused upon factors affecting life upon this planet. If and when POEM@Home stabilizes, I will likely shift those otherwise forcibly idle GPUs there.

Although I doubt that I will solicit your approval regardless of the potential for controversy.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

Nothing directed at you. I too look forward to having something worthwhile to crunch. It's more a commentary on the problem of point inflation between projects that needs to be systematically addressed by the BOINC staff, but they are unwilling at this point and the abuse merely continues and increases.

I've got several cards sitting here waiting for the beta launch. It should be a blast.

I think you can tell from my badge collection (or the lack thereof) that I direct my efforts towards those areas which I believe will yield humanity the largest return rather than chasing points or badges. When it comes to choosing projects, I believe that each should choose what they believe in rather than the one with the most "remuneration"; consequently, I don't care who awards what or whether words like "fair" and "equitable" can be used as a descriptive. I do CEP2 because I believe that solving the energy problem will free up a lot of cold, hard cash that may be used to fund all of the other scientific efforts in the world.

My own participation in Collatz Conjecture arose from the fact that they claimed to be able to run on a GPU while using only 0.01 cores...that I had to see, and I wanted to know how reliable my cards would be under heavy loading on a 24/7 duty cycle. To date, I have had positive answers to both points of curiosity.

I guess mentioning that Moo pays MUCH better than even Collatz and that Dnetc, now closed, paid very well too is pointless! Credits for work done is one subject that tends to evoke some strong emotions and there have been threads in most projects about how much or how little each project pays. There have however been VERY few discussions about gpu's being used for 'worthwhile' projects and which ones those might be. I kind of like MilkyWay but it does require a gpu with double precision, meaning not a cheap one by any means! Collatz is attempting to prove a math conjecture, while Moo is trying to prove a point to those in the security field, that it CAN be done. We all crunch for our own reasons, the whole point of it is though is to crunch! EVERY project benefits from our crunching, also the knowledge learned by our crunching can be used for a long time to come to both improve crunching and to improve pc parts to facilitate even better crunching!
CRUNCH ON!!!

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

Hi, sorry for my bad english, I have an XFX ATI HD 5970, can I use it for some WCG project? Thanks in advice.
I'm actually crunching with my I7 920 @ 3.5GHZ :)

Not at the moment, they are working on a Beta that will include using a gpu, on an opt-in basis, but nothing announced other than that yet, especially no official time frames yet either! We users were hoping it would be earlier this year, but the WCG is not ready yet! It is ONLY March, we have a long time of crunching ahead of us yet!
