Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

In the future the app might change, recommendations might be altered, drivers might improve some GPU's over others, new motherboard architectures might bring improvements, and there will be more GPU's turning up. In a few months when the project goes live (for GPU tasks), cards will be less expensive, you will know exactly what performance/input they will bring. So invest in the right architecture at the right time to optimize your input, and consider the other WCG projects too; 22nm CPU's are due out soon. These will probably do more work, and cost less to run.
All excellent points, and why I am starting out on a lowly GT 430 until I can at least get the software to run. It has yielded a couple of fixes for problems thus far, even before I have gotten any betas. But as a matter of idle curiosity, I am wondering whether ANY of the results have been "correct" thus far. That is, do they match what the CPU version gives? Just because your card doesn't crash or give obvious errors does not mean that the result is scientifically valid. I am not expecting you, or anyone else to provide the answer now, but as we go along it is worth considering.

Knreed has said that YES the cpu and gpu units match very well so far. It is still in the early stages of testing and I am guessing many more cpu units will be sent out proving that it still works. If they have to produce two different kinds of units, cpu and gpu, it is more work and takes more time then if they can produce one kind of workunit and let whatever the user has crunch it.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

If you have idle GPUs, Folding@home is seeing some real results in the area of Alzheimer's Disease and reducing the side effects of advanced cancer treatments.
http://folding.typepad.com/

Folding works especially well on the Nvidia cards, due to CUDA being somewhat more suitable than OpenGL that AMD uses, but both are very useful. You can both Fold on the GPU and run BOINC/WCG on the CPU without problems. I do it on two PCs running Win7 64-bit, one a dedicated machine and the other for general desktop use. Folding on the display card sometime causes screen lag, so I usually don't do it there, but it depends on the card and other factors. It actually works fine on my GT 430, but not well on my GTX 560s.

(I will be adding an AMD 7000 series card for WCG GPU projects when the beta phase is over with, and keep the Nvidia cards for Folding.)

Hi, Jim1348:

Thanks for the Folding information. I now have Folding running on a Sapphire HD 6570, shared with POEM tasks when available, as well as some Prime Grid tasks. I am looking forward to starting my new HD 6790 on Tuesday 27 March, processing POEM/Milky Way/Folding/Prime tasks as I await the arrival of WCG OpenCL project tasks.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

To those who may be interested:

I just found out the EVGA has a 90-day Step-up program, where you can send them your recently purchased card and upgrade (pay the difference) to a newer card. Since I recently bought my 570 for 330 (before the price drop), I was able to Step-up to the 680 for $165 (as long as it's an upgrade you could go from a 550 Ti to a 560, 580 etc.).

There is currently a queue of #574 (that's my place in line), to get this card (680) from the step up program. crying

Thought it was a pretty sweet deal, so I figured I would spread the word.

I have also heard of people who are waiting to buy the 680 and be within the 90 days of the supposed 685 release.

A note on this though: On NVIDIA forums, one person made a very good comment about how the GK104 board may be their high end gaming board, since companies like EVGA are making the 680 into their FTW series and Hydro Copper series (like their previous high-end cards). Some believe they (NVIDIA) may "push" their GK110/112 board to Tesla/Quaddro. confused

All rumors and speculation of course, but food for thought.

Crunching on.....

P.S. If no one has used a 680 for the Beta tests yet, I would be MORE THAN HAPPY to run Betas for testing whenever I get the card (couple weeks min. I'm assuming) biggrin

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

JUST an FYI. The GTX680 will be a superior card for gaming and running CUDA apps (like SETI) but will lag behind the 78xx and 79xx ATI cards for running OpenCL GPU tasks because Nvidia drivers are not as well optimized as ATI to run OpenCL. If you're looking to upgrade your video card to crunch for WCG then ATI will be a better choice at this time. There are also no GTX680 drivers for Win XP at the present.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

Yea, I am aware of this issue........

However, I have recently switched from PS3 to PC for Battlefield 3, and the 570 with 1.25 GB VRAM, wasn't enough to play at Ultra settings. Also looking forward to less heat, power, and TXAA

Currently I am also crunching on GPUgrid as well, and since the card has roughly double the FP32 (3 Tflops compared to 1.4), figured it was worth it. Once the WCG app is out and finished, I would like to be able to go back to GPUgrid with this card until WCG has more apps available.

P.S. I don't know why I'm "afraid" of messing with ATI cards. From what I've heard, their driver support isn't as good as NVIDIA (even though that sleep bug is annoying). I do plan on buying a 6850 whenever the WCG app is released to see what using one of their products is like working with though

I am also aware of the decrease in GPU utilization with Windows 7, but alas this is currently my top rig, and I cannot afford rolling back to XP for the higher GPU utilization (GPUgrid anyway)

Have you been crunching on the 680's yet on any BOINC projects Nudget?

Waiting in Step-Up queue for mine (probably month away)
