While I would agree with your logic, I must assert that the facts demonstrate otherwise. It doesn't take too much searching on this forum to see that even the slightest hint of a vague promise of something that might happen is taken as law and there is no end to the complaining when this deadline is not met. I'm perfectly fine with the amount of information that is provided. They have never failed to let us know what the plans are and which things are intended to be implemented. The only information not typically provided is a specific timeline. Considering the limited resources they have personnel wise and the multitude of delays that can unexpectedly appear, i consider this a very reasonable omission. No, have you missed the hundreds of posts about GPU computing, prior to them announcing? Complaining happens no matter what. Are you sure we we are talking about the same organization. There is almost no information about any future plans. For example, what is the next research project they are working on? Are they working on any updates to the web site? While I appreciate they work with a small staff however communication does not take that much time. |

Because of the large variety of processors, we will probably have a longer than average Beta test. and then we may get to read all the whining about why a specific GPU is not supported. Am so looking forward to that. ![]() For a 50X increase in speed it is worth it. The idea is to get the research done, not to minimize whining. |

With the new processors from AMD and intel coming out shortly, am sure many folks are preparing new builds. And idea if this will be GPU specific would help unless this will support open CL or GL, which ever the one that both cards support. With AMD bulldozer 8 core chips under 300 bucks, a new cruncher will be relatively inexpensive. The high end gpu's are a different story though.

Cannot wait until GPU folding can starts. then I can get my
2 GTX 560's folding. |

It doesn't take too much searching on this forum to see that even the slightest hint of a vague promise of something that might happen is taken as law and there is no end to the complaining when this deadline is not met. An interesting case in the study of corporatePersonality. There are companies that view expectations from the outsideWorld as a positve thing while others view it in the negative.Where the positives see statements informing the outsideWorld of a coming project (with increasing detail as the project progresses) as a form of advertisement that will get or hold mindShare from crunchers, the negatives see the same statements as a form of self-inflicted pressure that will entail painful work. The negatives want all the "flexibilty" they can lay their hands on, including the flexibility to NOT meet the demand. The positives see pressure in a different light: demand is an opportunity to make money, deny the competition some asset or advantage, or professionally grow, with the pressure attendant to meeting that demand -- as something that happens as matter of course, enjoyable, and never painful. ; |

datahelp, when the HCC-GPU project finally turns up it won't be a folding project, it will be a continuation of the existing HCC project which is concerned with identifying potentially viable crystals of proteins, suitable for performing X-Ray Crystallography. This was explained in the link in this threads first post by one of the scientists; 'We have developed a GPU version of an automated image analysis and classification system for protein crystallization trial images from the Hauptman Woodward Institute's High-Throughput Screening lab...
If you want to fold molecules, Folding@home runs folding projects on CPU and GPU (non-Boinc client), Poem@home folds proteins (on CPU), Foldit is an interactive (non-Boinc) game-like project that runs folding projects on a CPU. You can presently use your GPU at several projects; GPUGrid (Bio-Molecular research), Einstein (gravitational wave detection attempt), MW (mapping the cosmos, when the site is up), plus a few other projects not worth mentioning. PS. The first mention/suggestion to use GPU's at WCG was back in Nov 2004. |

Cannot wait until GPU folding can starts. then I can get my 2 GTX 560's folding. Hi datahelp, "Folding" being kind of a generic term of distributed computing, WCG has an actual *folding* research going called "Human Proteome Folding, Phase 2"... for the promoting what we got in-house ;-) As for HCC on GPU, it will be part of the HCC1 as far as I've understood for longer. What other drifts of interpretation, HCC2 mentioned above is in the "We are finalizing a new proposal" phase as noted by Dr Cumbaa in the update document, which to me infers that the funding has still to be found and in that I think WCG is best not to engage into any project that is not able to carry it through to the end of compiling, analyzing and producing a conclusion of findings and producing a dataset that is accessible to all the science community. A multi-year commitment. When that is established, WCG will invest half a year or longer to bring such a science to the grid [for free]. Reasonable, no, a prime requirement to me, to deserve anyone's volunteered computing time. --//-- |

The task still has to be programmed to run in the particular gpu. It's a lot easier to program the tasks for a cpu core then a gpu core.

We currently have 8 projects (9 counting DDDT2) here on WCG. I don't think we need to know what new projects are coming and when. Just crunch on the ones that are available, there's still a lot to be done. Is that simple. DSFL started without introduction (besides the betas). Knowing it was coming months before wouldn't have made any difference.
