Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

It seems that there have been no WUs in the queue today; is this project unofficially out of work for Phase 2?

Once again, it has been several days already since there are no more new jobs waiting in the "techs cupboards".
But there are still many jobs to come back from slow clients' queues which will most probably induce the generation of more child and grandchild WUs to process the positions that these slower machines will not have been able to compute before the 6-hour limit.
So, if you really want to sip the last drops of this project there is still some hope.
But if you don't want your machines to stay idle make sure that you also have another active project selected or the "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above..." box checked.

Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

Just had to abort one for somebody - been nursing it along in a laptop that overheats and shuts down even when I suspended the other cores task but it wasn't going to make it so I sent it back. Happy Crunching!

w0en, it sounds as though it might be worthwhile cleaning your laptop out with compressed air - as described in the 'The "Clean Out Those Dustbunnies" ' thread...

Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

For my-self, I experience currently a crazy situation.
...
Within 5 years, it is the first time I experience such a mistake.
...
Something went wrong.

Hi Yves!
Nothing went wrong. It has always been like that! smile
It's only that it is probably the first time that you leave a HCMD2-only machine unattended with a cache larger than, say, 2 or 2.5 days.
And you have been caught by the terrific yoyo effect of the unrealistic size estimating of this particular project. laughing

By experience after processing more than 47,000 HCMD2 WUs, the average duration of HCMD2 WUs in my quad is (very roughly to make things simpler):
- parents: 6 CPU hours
- children: 3 CPU hours
- grandchildren: 1.5 CPU hour.

But they have always been estimated by the server something like:
- parents: 2.5 CPU hours
- children and grandchildren: 3 CPU hours.

While that may be correct occasionally in, say, a P4 machine, in a fast machine it has the terrible effect that you have experienced: all parent WUs raise the DCF full size by much, while grandchildren decrease it only by 10 % of the difference for the longer ones and only by 1 % for the many ones which are then completing the process in less than 10 % of their estimated duration.

This effect was also amplified by the fact that the distribution of HCMD2 WUs was usually "by series": series of grandchildren, then series of children, then series of parents, etc...

I presume that the techs wanted the estimates to be closer to the majority of machines, i.e. the "P4 range", but I think that it was not the best choice because these machines are those which run with less jobs in their queues (so, very limited effect of DCF variations) while the DCF wildness had the most detrimental effect on machines with many jobs in queue, i.e. the fastest ones.

Anyway, that will soon be history. smile

Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

Hi Jean,
indeed I usually maintained a cache size between 1 and 3 days depending if I am close to the hosts or with a good internet connection or far from the systems resp. without access to internet.
Since we are close to the end and the hosts are "HCMD2 only" until project end, I carefully made the cache a little bit larger.
The both most impacted hosts are the two Phenom II x6 which fetched around 500 Wus last Monday at the time when mostly very short WUs (GC, GGC) have been distributed.
We will see what will happen until end of this week.
In all cases, I will miss the 30 years milestone for HCMD2, hoping (but not sure) to reach 29 years.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

Results Returned 2/20/12 00:06:02 UTC 37,730
Do we have any idea at this point what the rate of re sends are?
I have 8 6 hour work units waiting in PV. I need roughly 9 day of work yo get to my goal of 2 years after PV have cleared. I've set prefs just for 2 days & HCMD2 only until l need to more work then I grab HFCC then set back to HCMD2 only

Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

Finally, the queue is stabilised and the hosts will surely meet the deadline.
By the way, I reached 29 years for HCMD2 last night. In all cases, too late for achieving a 30 years goal.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Phase 2 - 18 days left of new work

Two days away from making my 10 years, but I've got enough results to do it. For those of you still looking, the resends should start coming out hot and heavy. Get your buckets out on those reliable machines.
