Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

How would overclocking your cpu have any effect on how the GPU runs?

I should have clarified: Don't overclock the GPU (a lot of gamers do it, for example with the MSI Afterburner).

Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

Hi 5pot,
It is almost impossible to spot an error in a GPU. What!? One pixel is off every 3 seconds while playing a game? An overclocked GPU can start computing erroneous information without giving any warning. They are so fast anyway that the risk is unwarranted.

Gaming stresses different parts of a card than crunching. If you have any Nvidia cards run a program called GPU temp. One of the 4 readings it will show in the GUI is gaming engine percentage being used. When just crunching that value is at 0% on my GTX 460. That said, overclocking will get you better performance in games but when crunching the gains are not really worth it IMHO.

Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

I see the new Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 have already come out.
I checked at newegg and they are already SOLD OUT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp...orce%20GTX%20600%20series

laughing

Now might be a good time to get good buys on the 500 series cards.

Edit: Was just looking at a hardware review on the 680 and by the specs this thing is a beast.
One line from the article stood out to me...
"huge increase in stream processor count to 1,536 for the whole GPU (tripled in comparison to the GTX 580 1.5GB’s 512 stream processors)" shock

Seems it didn't stack up very well against the 7970 for open CL
Especially in double precision.

Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

Thanks for the post skgiven as that fills in some blanks for me. coffee

Prices for Nvidia seem to be fluctuating greatly. Amazon's system constantly reprices items based on purchases, wish list, views and many other factors. For the last couple of weeks the EVGA GTX570 has been $299.99. Last Saturday I checked and it was $249.99 with their "Hurry, only 6 left" message. I thought they were dumping their inventory and I ordered one (wish I had ordered two). Sunday afternoon I went to the page as I could not rembember the memory clock speed and it was $279.99. Tuesday when the card arrived I looked and it was back to $299.99. This morning it is $289.99. This is a bit strange even for Amazon as normally when prices on cards start to fall they usually keep going down. Just a heads up.

peace

Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

It looks like Nvidia took one step forward and two steps back.
It seems the 680 is likely to be a good game card but when I
saw the compute performance figures it's very disappointing...
Makes me glad I got the 560 when I did. I only wish I had gotten 2 of them while they were avalible.
At the time the 560 Ti 448 seemed to be the best NV card for
purchase price / watts to operate / compute performance / gaming performance

Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

The following two GPU BETAs have errored

At the risk of telling you what you already know,
  • Don't overclock your GPU
  • Keep the cards cool

(Edited to emphasize GPU)

My GPUs are running stock and are not overclocked. smile

Re: GPU Support: Post Your Problems/Questions Here

What about the Nvidia TESLA boards that are dedicated to crunching. Is OpenCL supported on those cards, could it work with WCG?
