Well, leave it to the State of Missouri to make things interesting. For those of you non-Missourians, they have Tax Free Weekend, which just happens to be this weekend. :)

So the time for me to buy a computer would be this weekend. Which I can do.

I went to a Best Buy today, and their selection, to say the least, was feces. They had no variety, unless you wanted a laptop. Which I do not.

Micro center is the only other store I can find around here. They have an Alien Ware that's 1900 bucks, and has a 3820 i7 processor. Not sure if that's worth it. They have one of their name brands which has I believe a 2700k processor, i7. Can't really tell if one is worth more than the other, crunching? That computer is close to 1500 bucks.

This sucks. LOL

Dr. Mike While the processor you choose is but one part of the puzzle, it is the most important single part. A good place to compare Intel Processors is here You can select from among the pocessors and do a side-by-side comparison. If the comparison was solely on processors at those prices, then the 2700K would give you the most bang for the buck but the 3820 would likely accomplish more given that the money is not the determining factor. Just a side note, the AlienWare is likely to have better components than most brands. (Just an opinion).

coffee coffee coffeeGood Satruday Morning MOT coffee coffee coffee

Congratulations Vuj and PohSoon!! applause applause

Another sweltering day here in Texas. Hope Oklahoma gets a break in the weather. Like Colorado, they have had some terrible fires.

Everyone stay cool and have a great day.

It used to be that taking a bite of a chicken sandwich just meant you were hungry. Now it is a symbol of whether you stand for or against same-sex marriage, or -- alternately -- the right to express your personal views without fear of governmental retaliation (as is going on currently in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Washington DC and elsewhere).
Will Rodgers once said: "It is a good thing that we don't get all the government we pay for"
Still true today but never the less we have way too much government and this is but another example.
I/we are going to drive several dozen miles again today to eat at Chick-fil-A; not because we are for or against same-sex marriage but to support everyone's rights to express their opinions. (Oh and because the chicken is good (not sure I would be so supportive if the chicken tasted like McDonalds chicken))

If it's not confusing enough here's more food for thought. WCG will be coming out with a GPU app for HCC. What that means is that you'll be able to run HCC tasks on your GPU, which is much faster(15x or more) than doing them on your CPU. If you're looking for a new computer the graphics card should be part of the equation. Hey, it's only money. biggrin

Just in case you didn't know, Alienware is made by Dell.

Hi nano. smile

I was leaving the GPU out of this discussion as none of us knows when the GPU app will be ready and then which GPU will run it best. I took a guess and got a NVIDIA Geforce...but that was just a guess. I was thinking Dr. Mike could wait on that till we knew for sure which were the best for that app. Anyway; decision making in the face of uncertainty is always difficult. In this case, if you can defer that decision, it might be that something better will come along before the app is available.

Just a thought...for what it is worth. Everyone have a great day. smile smile

Mike, did some checking online and it looks like you have a choice among Best Buy, Office Depot, Micro Center and local shops for computers there (it's amazing what you can learn from Google and Google Maps). We have all three chains here in Atlanta and, in your shoes, I'd go with the Alienware at Micro Center. You could try calling online places like Frys, Newegg and Tiger Direct to see if they can handle the sales tax holiday on an order. That might give you more options. Generally though, I've found that, over the years, computers tend to fall into the under 1000 dollars, 1200-2000 and over 2400. The first is the cheap, slow stuff. The second range will get you a good machine with decent preloads. The last is the high end stuff targeting specific niches (in laptops, it will get you an ultralight, long-life battery, super fast machine). Since you're dead in the waters for now, I'd get the Alienware machine as it should be at least a quad CPU, probably with hyperthreading, so you'll be able to crunch eight WUs at once. It probably will have Win7 and enough preloads to handle your needs other than some version of MS Office. This gets you a decent if not good cruncher that will meet your normal non-crunching needs. Afterwards, you can look at adding maxed-out crunching-only machines.

BTW, the sales tax holiday for clothing, school supplies and computers is next Friday and Saturday here in Georgia.

EDIT: Oh yea, RT's right, leave the GPU card issue for later. Those tend to run extra hot anyway and the only reason to add them to this desktop would be if you get into gaming. That's something you can add later on to your dedicated crunching machines.
