I will give everyone a quick update, from your neighborhood Emergency Room (if your neighborhood includes St. Charles, Missouri). I just started my new job officially today. I have been working temporarily here over the past few months, and they like me. I like them. I do mostly Emergency Room (Pediatric patients only) and Labor and Delivery stuff. (I take care of the babies, not the adults..) I am STILL trying to find a place to live, even if temporarily. I'm about ready to pull my effin hair out. I drove last night from Kansas City, Kansas to St. Louis. 4 hours, with only minor speeding involved. I would personally like to thank the makers of Big Red soda, Coca Cola and Dairy Queen blizzards. I'm still trying to find a computer to start crunching with. I'm really getting frustrated with that, so i'll apologize ahead of time. I would like a crunching beast, that I can use on a regular basis for daily activities too. If you can't tell, i'm bored. LOL. It's great to see everyone too! Dr. Mike P.S. I haven't been to Kenya, but I was in North Dakota recently, for almost all of June. Mike, June is a great time to visit North Dakota (well, compared to January that is)! Actually, I have a nephew finishing up a degree in aviation at UND in Grand Forks. Interesting stories about what the winters can be like. Explains why he already has his private and commercial licenses and may be getting into flying drones. Ah, DQ Blizzards....throw in some Heath bits and I'm feeling good! I just wish they used the same meat supplier they have in Texas for the rest of the country. You can't beat the flavor. As it you've been working there as a temp before, you have to have some place you're staying in. Hopefully, you've got some flexibility when it comes to getting out of there once you find a house. Since you're bored, use your free time to drive around and check out the different areas. You'll be amazed at what you can learn when you see someone outside and mention that you're looking at possibly moving into the neighborhood. I don't know if you want to get something real close to work or if you're willing to drive a bit. From what I can figure out looking at Google Maps, if you don't go with something there in St Charles, you pretty much have to look further west. Going east puts you across the Missouri (and close to the main airport and it's noise) plus you have the bridges over the river as traffic bottlenecks. I see there a Lindenwood University not too far from work. Being in a neighboorhood near a college seems to get you nice, older homes not to mention a possibly nice group of coeds. ![]() ![]() It looks like the further west you go, to more likely I70 will be your main commute route. Learn what you can about the traffic patterns there and be sure to look at alternatives to I70 in the inevitable cases where it gets messed up. Seems that above O'Fallon and west of Wentzville, you're getting out of the suburbs and into the country. That may work for your like Ozark did if the drive is okay. Going south of the Missouri doesn't give you much in the way of river crossings. If one gets messed up, you can have a long detour to get to the next. You'd probably want to stck to something close to 141 or I270. Good luck with things and let us know how it's going! |

As everyone can see, July was an off month for us. We were down a good 10-15 percent over June and we're just past the quarter-billion mark. Making a half-billion this year seems unlikely unless we can do another seven months of crunching in the next five. Yea, GPU could really change that but, with the file system problems WCG's dealing with lately and the length of time they've put into GPU so far, I don't expect much soon. When they do get GPU ready, they're going to need a real good supply of WUs. When folks jump onto GPU crunching, they may have trouble keeping work supplied. In the meantime, let's keep doing what we can and try recruiting new folks too. We still have five months to go so there's still plenty of time.

Well, I hope Keith that I can start contributing soon. Doubt I can make up the 10 to 15 percent though. lol

Hi Mike. There's a lot of us here. It has been a rather interesting experience to say the least. It was an unusual change in my PSA in a routine physical that lead to finding my cancer. I never would have known otherwise as there were no symptoms. My urologist really made the point for early detection when he described the strategy as curing it when it's localized and containing it when it's not. My PSA was very low at 0.9 but realized it had been a while since I had the finger, so the Doc did that last year and found a lump. Consult with Urology at the Denver VA followed along with the subsequent Biopsy in January which showed a Gleason score of 6 (3+3) in one of the 12 samples. They didn't do a CT but are pretty sure it was localized. I had the da Vinci robotic surgery on June 26 and agree with the catheter being the only bad part so far! I had it ten days but felt like an eternity. Bladder control is getting better as each week passes. I have my follow up on Aug 8 when I'll find out the pathology report as well. What's interesting to me is that when you've been diagnosed with this, you join a fraternity of other prostate cancer patients & survivors. I was doing IT work at a business last week and the owner had one of his employees come talk to me. His PSA had gone from around 28 to 35 and then to 45! According to cancer.gov, "there is no specific normal or abnormal PSA level," however, that's really high! He has a biopsy scheduled. He asked a lot of questions about the surgery since he did not want radiation if it is cancer. I wish you and everyone else afflicted with this continued recovery and a clean bill of health! Mike, I hadn't realized that this was so recent for you. My surgery was on 7/2, about a week after yours. It's a tad wierd at times discussing it but I know that it can help others, even with things other than cancer. It's easy to believe that if you have something serious, you'll have some kind of symptoms. That's not necessarily the case. I had absolutely no symptoms and, as I've mentioned before, would never have found it if I hadn't been getting regular physicals. I already know of other folks who are getting in to see their doctors for overdue things. When you have a PSA test done, any value between zero and four is considered normal. My urologist mentioned that one of the worst cases of prostate cancer he dealt with was with someone with a PSA of 1.5. Likewise, over four does not automatically mean cancer either. Lots of things can temporarily boost your PSA - from recent sex to simply riding a bike. The PSA test is not definitive but can be one indicator. In my case, it was the amount of change and direction over the previous year. When you get regular physicals, you get to know what is normal for your body. That can be powerful knowledge. We all know how big a difference early detection makes with cancer. Regaining bladder control is a pain in the rear (well, not literally) but it sure beats the alternative. Doing the Kagel exercises they told me to do is helping a lot. Improvement seems to come unevenly. After the catheter first came out, I was having to get up every hour at night. After about 8-10 days of that, it suddenly changed to every 2-3 hours. Just the other night, I slept four hours straight. Sleeping through the night is going to be sweet when it finally happens! Monday will be three weeks (and five since the surgery). Saw my urologist this past Thursday and turns out I'm doing well. He likes to emphasize that everyone recovers differently. The 2-4 months at the earliest before normal sexual function returns is depressing but, like I say, it beats the alternative. Good luck with your recovery Mike! |

The thing I've learned over the years is that we'll have our ups and downs at one time or another. It's easy to get spoiled with the amazing efforts the folks on this team make. I never would have thought five years ago that this team would be discussing a half-billion points in one year in any context. We've come a long way from that fifty million point year. |

So how does one configure a PC? a workstation? If I knew how to do that, and effectively, I think i'd probably do so. Yuck.

So how does one configure a PC? a workstation? If I knew how to do that, and effectively, I think i'd probably do so. Yuck. Dr. Mike You just go to the website and pick components. Good websites will not let you do anything really stupid. I guess, were I you, I would pick a the Aurora then go to the talk and chat. I would get the default process or (3820) default opsys default memory (8Gig) default video card, 1TB druve, add the media reader. skip the monitor and buy it elsewhere, default sound, no wireless (use ethernet), default cd drive, Default your way out and order. Talk to the tech if you have quesitons. Don't let them talk you into bigger stuff.. |
