Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

I currently have 28 cores crunching on 10 separate machines. Of the 10 I have only bought 1 new. The rest have been bought used, some at auctions, or salvaged and put together from parts. I have about maxed out how much power I am allowed to use(by my better half, not the power company). When I can get a machine more efficient than my least efficient machine, I retire the old one and donate it to someone else or a charitable organization who can use it. The most obsolete machines are recycled. Needless to say, with salvage parts I have had my share of hardware failures, motherboards, hard drives, power supplies etc. Thank goodness there are some very generous people out there who supply excess parts very reasonably. The biggest cost is electricity.
Cheers

Wow, exciting, but the machines you donate, do they keep crunching in the next homes ? Could you make them ?

How about as well distributing the currently running machines on your end that you don't need to NGOs as you do, on the condition of letting them run 24/7 with you checking on them through the grid results, and on site every month or something ?

Any other ideas about hiring individuals/corporates to crunch ?

By the time I get rid of computer it is no longer cost effective to crunch with it. The new owners can crunch if they like, but usually they are just scraping by and can not afford the electric cost if they left them on all the time. They are free to use them as they see fit.
Cheers

Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

This is an interesting question, but perhaps a bit simplistic. I have a total of 42 threads. 8 are on an i7-2720QM machine which I had to stop using, as BOINC blue-screened the machine due to temps even with TThrottle. So, now 34 usable threads. (BOINC as the culprit was arrived at after full hardware testing and the removal of elective software.)

But, starting with my oldest machine, an i7-920, one can not simple run even desktops at 100%/100% of CPU's. Heat is the problem.

TThrottle @ 55 deg C helped with an i5-520M.
My i7-3930k has sealed liquid coolers.
My i7-840QM is on TThrottle @55 deg C.

No machine are at 100%/100%.

Oh, what a loss about the i7-2720 mitrichr, ain't there a way to fix that ? Reducing the running time/effort on it or smthn ?
N how about donating some of them to air-conditioned NGOs or something ?

N how about extension plans/suggestions/imagined solutions to increase productivity ?

Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

58 cores/threads on 7 computers good for around 200,000ppd...built all by me from discount parts obtained from the internet and local stores. I used to overclock all my systems until I discovered you can get about 75% of the performance for 50% of the power bill by running them stock or even under-clocking in some cases. In the winter time the extra heat from overclocking is nice, though!

2 X i7-2600k
3 X Phenom ii x6
1 X 24 core (2 X 12 core) AMD Opteron server build

ryan222h, wow !
How about extensions/recruitment ? How do you plan to increase work on your end, or using others around ?

Well, if I come across a good deal on cpus/mobos I will usually pick them up...however right now i'm about at my limit...not for cpu's but for the electricity bill...trying to keep it under $100 a month (except in the summer). So if I do upgrade it will be with an eye towards efficiency.

Interesting topic, but what does this thread have to do with "Caring and Sharing" ? Should this be moved to the "Chat" forum?

Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

1: 2 machines, 12 cores. All AMD Phenom II 1090T X 6 (Black)
2: Both home built.
2a: Win 7.
3: I'm running these about 100 h/wk, processing SN2S, GFAM, DSFL, CEP2, HCC, C4CW (when available), F@H, POEM@Home. Would run more hours but for electricity cost$.

Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

41 43 (edit: forgot a laptop that often loses boinctasks connectivity) cores by last rough estimate.

Basically I never retire systems until there is simply no hope. Last one to go was a P-III laptop that had to be hooked to an external monitor to see.

The laptops have been acquired for school, work needs, etc and eventually upgraded. Desktops (all running Linux) are mostly my personal fun systems; oldest one is an Alienware (from when they were still the best) and probably now the next in line to be unrepairable. It becomes harder to justify keeping around a single core system when I can throw in a cheap 6 or 8 thread board and re-use the case.

Today I just finalized an AMD X2-64 that I picked up on clearance from e-bay. If it's cheap and I'm in the mood, it becomes a cruncher.

When my mother-in-law visited from Guatemala last year her laptop had just died so I sent her home with one far better than what she had and it still returns work for me. She's happy and I have a cruncher that I don't have to monitor or pay electricity for.

Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

1: How many CPUs do you have crunching (& Types of machines) ?
A: Right now, 2 desktops, 1x i5-2320 and 1x Q9550. The i5 rig has a Zalman 9500AT on it and the Q9550 has a Hyper 212+ on it(Both using Arctic Silver 5 paste).
1 laptop, a Core2Duo T6600.

2: How did you succeed to recruit these machines ?
A: The laptop and the i5 systems I purchased in the month of January, a good month to get end of model cycle/after X-Mas deals. The Q9550 rig was inherited/donated by a relative because he had problems with random booting. Turns out the PSU is the culprit. So after I switch that out it will be a great 24/7 crunching machine.

3: What other ideas that you've had to increase your productivity, but didn't work (yet) ?
Buying servers, buying a i7 with hyperthreading, installing on families and g/f's computer.......

I am not sure about the server idea due to heat and electricity needs. Right now it gets pretty toasty in the same room as the Q9550 and i5 rigs. I usually run a box fan in the window of the room 24/7. I may have to move the i5 into the kitchen during the winter, as it has poor insulation from the outside and is 5-10oF cooler than the main room.

I've also considered buying used workstations as well. This crunching thing is an addiction.

Re: How Many CPUs You Use & How Did You Get Them?

1: How many CPUs do you have crunching (& Types of machines)?
A: I got 2 laptops. The older one has 1 core while the newest has an Intel Core i5-2450M 2.50 GHz which has 2 cores. So in total I have 3 cores at my disposal although I haven't been using the old one in the summer because of heat production and electricity consumption.

2: How did you succeed to recruit these machines?
A: My old laptop was bought 7 years ago and after its screen backlight burned out this summer, I bought a new one for my studies, while I also control the old one thought Teamviewer.

3: What other ideas that you've had to increase your productivity, but didn't work (yet)?
A: I should probably tell my close friends about WCG and BOINC but I have been discouraged after I couldn't convince my father to install it on his laptop and after my computer teacher in high school mocked me after asking him his opinion about distributed computing.

my computer teacher in high school mocked me after asking him his opinion about distributed programing.

What a mean thing to do. As a teacher he should have been open to innovative ideas, especially on different approaches to solve some of humanities vexing problems.
