so it cant be this card is nearly as fast as 7970 ^^ my 7950 is doing 60k boinc credit per day and that on a really old quad core (Q6600 with nearly unacceptable cpu times per WU and only max (not average) 84% GPU Load ^^). im sure 7970 can reach with a faster CPU perhaps 100k per day.

still can not justify well over $300.00 for the 7900 series... Thats what I was thinking when I ordered my 7870. If you don't mind brand names, can get one for under 200 bucks. When the 8000 series come out starting in December, all the 7000 series will drop too.

If you could convince those bitcoin miners, they could complete this project in one day. There are a lot of them out there that own 100+ HD 7970s, that is how they make their living. Looking at the estimate in February. The Bitcoin network made up of entirely AMD graphics cards (everyone makes sure to buy several of the latest cards every 2 years with the bitcoins earned), with a total of 208,000 TFLOPS of power, in comparison, Folding@Home only averages 8,600 TFLOPS. WCG is tiny compared to that. I think when the new bitforce FPGAs come out they will ditch their graphics cards (sell them on ebay or use them on BOINC). Fun fact: Fastest supercomputer in the world is only 20,000 TFLOPS. The other problems is that ARE other Boinc Projects out there doing similar work to WCG, MalariaControl does work on Malaria, Poem and Rosetta do other medical style crunching, etc, etc. IF WCG were the ONLY Project doing this type of crunching their numbers WOULD be higher, but having to share is hurting their overall numbers. As are all the Math based projects, along with the Science, as in ET, mapping the Galaxy, etc, etc, type Projects. Heck there used to even be a Beer based Project!! Here is a list of the currently available Distributed Computing Projects, although it hasn't been kept updated very well, the Boinc ones are noted: http://www.distributedcomputing.info/projects.html ![]() ![]() |

That's really low, my 7950 gets 100K BOINC PPD. It is possible for 7970 to achieve 115-130K PPD, depending on your RAM and NB. Don't go for the whole CPU thing, there is a point where having extra CPU doesn't improve time as much as having better memory. I achieved a huge increase in utilization by overclocking my memory to 1800Mhz, much higher than overclocking the processor did. For a 7950, I advise around 8 WUs, and get that RAM running 1800MHz. If you have the ability to get 2133Mhz RAM, you will easily get max utilization. I recommend quad channel 2133Mhz for two 7950/70s. As for the guy who can't justify buying a 7950, I ask, why? I already explained in a previous thread how much faster 7950 is to 7870, and how much more it costs in comparison, and the cost per performance ratio is better with the 7950 than a 7870, with a decent margin. For some reason I guess a mod deleted that comment, for reasons unknown. (Make sure it has aftermarket cooling, this is VITAL for cards doing OpenCL research projects where temperatures create errors and inability to overclock) Radeon HD 7870 = 1280 shader cores @ $240 on Amazon Radeon HD 7950 = 1796 shader cores @ $314 on Amazon 7950 has 40% more shaders for 31% the extra price, and has the ability to clock higher due to having better grade silicon, wielding an even greater difference in the end. Well, if WCG only has GPU-work for an additional 3-4 months and if someone won't use GPU for non-WCG-projects, buying a 7950 is expensive. Also, going by Amazon.co.uk, here in Europe the cheapest HD-7950 costs roughly €300 or roughly $400 while the cheapest HD-7850 costs roughly €170, meaning the HD-7950 is roughly 80% more expensive but has only 63% higher single-floating-point-performance. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. I'm the guy... I can not justify 100.00 to 230.00 dollars more for a gpu just for crunching period. $400.00 + can be used for better things than for that. I look at this I bought the 7870 instead of the 7900 series and saved at least 200.00 dollars. and I can still do pleanty of my video editing at the same time....

No need to break the bank on this volunteer initiative. It just depends on how much you can afford ...every contribution will help.
