Re: So how many days are left for HCC?

Hi herflick,
Evidently you do not follow the financial news. In recent history, bitcoins have had a big runup (Party like it's 1999!) followed by a large correction. (1987!!) So bitcoins are definitely in the news but are volatile. Nobody knows what their future is. Asking a friend for advice is a good way to lose a friend. I suggest you use Google for this topic if you are thinking about making money this way.

Re: So how many days are left for HCC?

Basing purchase-decisions on possible future work is a bad idea then it comes to GPU's. As Folding@home has shown, all early GPU-adopters buying Ati-cards in 2006 and for large parts of 2007 was sitting with useless cards when an upgraded GPU-application was released.

I agree, but it is not just an ATI verses Nvidia situtation. The new Kepler cards from Nvidia are disappointing a lot of people who bought them for Folding. Maybe that will improve with upgrades to the Folding software, but I think it is more likely that it will take another generation of cards from Nvidia that are more optimized for GPU crunching. But they all become obsolete in a couple of generations anyway, so whether you shift brands or not is somewhat irrelevant at that point.

Re: So how many days are left for HCC?

I'm sorry? Last time I checked, POEM@Home and various other projects, even Folding@home, support these graphics cards.

Roughly 90% of active BOINC-users runs a single project, and doesn't care about any other projects. For majority of WCG-users their GPU-card will only be used for WCG, and since WCG at the moment only has "known" GPU-work for 3-4 months, advocating these users to buy an expensive 79xx that can be useless in 3 months is not a good idea.

So, until WCG announces something like "HCC adds 6+ months of more work" or "we''ll be releasing a currently unnamed project early 2013 that will use OpenCL and is expected to have 1+ year of GPU-work", buying an expensive 79xx that only will be used at WCG will be a bad idea.

Is that a project issue or a lack of information issue? How can we expand the base so MORE people know about other projects? Should one project even tell their users about the other projects available? Has Boinc gotten into a 'fighting for users' area and are the different projects 'protecting their own' at the expense of Science or whatever? NOT all Boinc projects are Science related! WCG has a Fighting Malaria project, there ARE several other Projects doing that too, SHOULD WCG be telling others about the other Boinc Projects that are also looking at a cure for Malaria as WCG's own Project winds down? WCG has closed several projects lately and there ARE more to come, sure SOME will have a phase 2, 3 or whatever but NOT ALL will!

Sekerob's chart says 171 days left at HCC as of yesterdays update! I have personally moved a couple of pc's doing cpu only work away so that may give someone a few extra units here or there. I do not do gpu crunching here.

Re: So how many days are left for HCC?

Is that a project issue or a lack of information issue?

My guess it's mainly the "I-don't-care-about-any-other-project"-issue.

Some numbers from "Granted credit comparison" at http://boinc.netsoft-online.com/e107_plugins/boinc/get_cpcs.php shows CPDN at only 3.1% of computers taking part in other project, probably the lowest of any BOINC-projects. SETI@home actively encourages users to join other projects is at 11.6% while WCG is at 11.7%.

Also interestingly, despite POEM@home and DiRT is currently the two highest-paying BOINC-projects, there the slight advantage depends on GPU, and POEM@home is another health-related project and should therefore be a good fit for WCG, only 0.33% of WCG-computers runs this project. DiRT not being any health-related at all but still is the highest-paying project for some GPU's is at 0.008%, so clearly most WCG-users isn't lured-away by high-paying GPU-projects.

Then your point is moot. The few people who pay money for dedicated hardware for BOINC DO care about projects that can run on their hardware and therefore DO care about other projects. I build systems for BOINC, and I use my hardware where it works the best. If HCC didn't have an app, I would be at POEM. If POEM didn't have an app I would be at MilkyWay@Home. In all honesty, since I have several AMD GPUs, I could be bitmining for extra currency right now.

Re: So how many days are left for HCC?

There Are enough Out there who use a own machine for every project. So because only one machine runns wcg and neverpoem it dont means the user behind dont run other projects like poem or dont know them. And second point not every machine can run two projects effectivly due hardware limits and restrict them too to only run one project. So i cant agree with you ;)

LOL, guess some of the top SETI@home-crunchers haven't got the memo telling them that "pay money for dedicated hardware" equals "care about other projects".

Let's respect everyone who crunches whether they have the resources (or interest) to get a stronger GPU or not. All crunching efforts are valuable to their related projects.

+1

one never know which single WU can be a "silver bullet" so ANY effort is valuable ..
