Saw a comment elsewhere from SekeRob about the BOINC workshop 10 days ago. A series of videos were made and are available to view Watched Keith Uplinger and Kevin Reed: Update on World Community Grid and Results of our User Participation Study Thanks for flagging this up jonnieb-uk [oops, I had thought that the OP was from Scribe], I just watched it too. I picked out that a lot of the recent activity comes as a result of a change of sponsoring executive within IBM and I think it's good that they've been given a bit of a kick from on high. It seems to be forcing them to re-focus on the volunteers, and I found the results of the survey work interesting. All in all I'm pretty happy with what's going on and look forward to the re-launch of the web site so we can see the results of all the work that they're currently doing. All in all I'm pretty happy with what's going on and look forward to the re-launch of the web site so we can see the results of all the work that they're currently doing. I found that interesting as well. I think it symptomatic of WCG's underlying communication problem that we (the volunteers) had to find it out from an obscure video on a 3rd party site. I should say that I'm generally happy crunching at WCG and have no desire to look at other projects. I'm doing GPU at Collatz because it doesn't reduce my WCG crunching whilst we're waiting for them to find another GPU capable project. But it's not my nature to unquestioningly accept the status quo so I'll continue to post when things grab my attention - badges; project mix; forum software etc etc. I dread to think how opinionated/grumpy/cantakerous/unreasonable I'll be in 15 years time when I get to Scribe's age! |

I won't roll over and let them tickle my tummy either. But the IBMers only have limited time and resources and they have to juggle getting the science done and keeping their paymasters happy with keeping us loud-mouths on board. I don't think they have an easy job and I'm sure that they're dedicated and hard-working. I have a lot of respect for them.
One other thing I picked up on in the video and have been thinking about is a comment to the effect that they'd like to see BOINC stop the client application running if it detects too much swapping. This is aimed at reducing the impact on the volunteer's computer. I like the idea in general, but what I think this is showing is that it's the HDD thrashing about that really slows things down. On win-doze systems that have plenty of RAM I tend to run with no swap file 'cos I don't have anything that eats memory, but there are still times when CEP2 gets in the way. It seems to be primarily due to the large amount of I/O that's triggered when a new WU fires up, though I also notice it when a large result file is being uploaded. So personally I'd look at I/O rates in general, and not just to the swap file. |

I see there are quite a few in the team that list themselves as International, rather than in the UK!

I see there are quite a few in the team that list themselves as International, rather than in the UK! ![]() http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=bwcg&team=2210# I think it's because the default setting on sign-up is "International". You actually have to choose "UK". It's the same as the issue with disclosing email addresses to Team Captains when signing up for a team. Default is "don't disclose". knreed talked (in the video) about the difficulties new users have in deciding on Project selection (when there are projects to select). New users need to be spoonfed so:
@ crooks_uk See para 2 in Apis Tintinnambulator post above. Is it "swapping" that causes you problems when rendering? |

....entirely agree, put it in a post in the Feedback?suggestion forum. We then may start a trend and push through to the Admins ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 8, 2013 2:50:25 PM] |
