Het Radboudumc heeft de eerste patiënt onderzocht met een speciale nanovloeistof, die zeer kleine uitzaaiingen in lymfeklieren zichtbaar maakt. Dankzij deze vloeistof zijn uitzaaiingen vanaf 2 millimeter zichtbaar. Voor patiënten is dit een grote stap voorwaarts in het vaststellen van de uitbreiding van hun ziekte.

Het Radboudumc is vooralsnog het enige ziekenhuis in de wereld waar deze techniek wordt toegepast.
Het ontdekken van kleine uitzaaiingen is met de huidige diagnostiek erg moeilijk: uit onderzoek is gebleken dat 70 procent van de uitzaaiingen, die kleiner zijn dan 8 millimeter, niet wordt gevonden met gewone CT of MRI-scans. Ook worden deze uitzaaiingen bij 40 procent van de patiënten bij kijkoperaties gemist en vallen ze in meer dan 50 procent buiten het standaard bestralingsveld.
De nano-MRI ontdekt lymfklieruitzaaiingen als ze nog zeer klein zijn. Door de vroegere opsporing is beeldgestuurde behandeling zoals gerichte bestraling of operatie mogelijk. Dit leidt tot minder bijwerkingen en een grotere kans op genezing.
Genezing
De nanovloeistof bestaat uit kleine ijzerdeeltjes, die door een arts in een ader van de arm worden gespoten. Na 24 uur komt de patiënt terug voor een MRI-scan. Prof. dr. Jelle Barentsz: "Met de nano-vloeistof en onze speciale MRI-techniek zien we uitzaaiingen wit oplichten als een zaklamp in het duister, terwijl de gezonde klieren zwart zijn. Voor patiënten is dit een grote stap voorwaarts. Als we heel precies zien waar de kanker zit, kunnen we ook veel gerichter behandelen. Dit bespaart patiënten operaties en geeft ze betere genezingskansen."
De komende weken zal het Radboudumc dit onderzoek aan vier patiënten per week aanbieden. Barentsz: "In eerste instantie richten we ons op patiënten met terugkerende prostaatkanker of een verhoogd risico op lymfklieruitzaaiingen. We willen onze capaciteit snel uitbreiden, omdat de nanovloeistof ook werkt bij andere kankersoorten, zoals borstkanker."
