No Problem parmesian
----------------------------------------Sorry I might have come across a bit harsh. I gave some thought to my form of words unfortunately there didn't seem a way to get the message across (that does need to be said - folks have lost there jobs over at grid.org and seti and I wouldn't want it to happen to any of our number) without taking the high ground and being heavy handed. Your honour and reputation is safe with us ![]() Dave ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by David Autumns at Sep 10, 2005 4:01:22 PM] |

----------------------------------------Actually there is a very simple way to check if all your systems are still running (very useful if you run more than a few): "My Grid", "Device Manager", "Device Statistics" and then simply check the "Last Result Returned" column. That always helps me to quickly verify if all of the farm are still running, without physically going to all machines to check. ![]()

This works if you have high end machines - my PII has been working on a job for 5 1/2 days and is only 70% complete so for slow machines this method doesn't help. You can click the script again to revert from service back to usual user program. The client is started as regular program automatically and you can check the status. Click the script again and whoppa... it's reverted back to server mode. I have the client running as a service on quite a few machines. Not to hide it but to make it continue crunching after the user logged out. All machines I administer run 24/7 so I can access them for remote work at those unusual times I work at. The client works great as a client. Be sure to check if the computer has a private firewall that might need manual right granting for the service to access the internet. Best, Stefan. |

Hi folks!
More from the xw6200... The virtual machine's RAM was increased to 1152 (memory score 300) on Thursday evening. It was now running for more than three days without any other use -- the linux host system was idle as well. The output of the virtual W2K machine was (surprise!!) a steady 800 points per 24h. Remember: the idle native XP installation delivered 814 points per 24h so the output sacrifice due to emulation of a virtual PC is only 14/814 or 1.7%!!! The output with 512MB for the virtual machine was much lower (about 600) so RAM has a strong influence on scoring although the RAM isn't actually used (taskmanager says the machine never uses more than some 380 MB). Will post the scores this evening when I'm back at the machine (I'm outside the firewall right now). This evening I will clone the virtual machine (done by only a few clicks), remove the working directory from the clone (so after starting the client it will get a new work unit for the clone) and start BOTH virtual machines. As I have only 2GB of physical RAM I will have to reduce the machines' RAM size. 2 x 768 MB will definitely work. But it's a new version of VMware and it's said to have a new and advanced virtual memory engine so it can share unused RAM among virtual machines. As the WCG client uses only 384MB RAM I might be able to give each machine more than 768MB and still have enough free RAM for Linux (needs only 200MB on an idle system anyway). Will try 2 x 768 first and increase after a day or two. This will be the Dual-CPU test. The HTT test (with 4 clients resp. 4 machines with 1 client each) will follow. Best, Stefan. |
