Re: smile smile smile Join MyOnlineTeam Today! smile smile smile

I'd like to make a request that somebody (and by "somebody" I mean Graham biggrin ) make banner that could be put in a signature line that is a little bit more generic about the whole WCG thing. At a local forum that I frequent I have:
Join Our Top 3 Team Visit Website

in my signature line.

I would like to have something to put next to it, or replace it, that plugs the WCG effort in general and hints as to its puropse.
Maybe something like resizing their banner of:

and putting a tag line within it something like:
"Join My OnLine Team at the World Computing Grid today and contribute to projects that benefit humanity."

The idea being to arouse the curiosity of those to whom the name "My Online Team" and "WCG" is meaningless and make them want to click - just to find out more about it, if nothing else.

smile Hi - dc
I have not overlooked your request
I have to get my system back to normal and I will give it my attention

where is my post??

Yesterday I sent a post about my point output numbers for 2 virtual
machines (1340 points/24h) and 4 virtual machines (2030 points/24h)
from a single PC (with 2 CPUs and 2 GB of RAM).

At least I thought so -- was it moved or did I forget to send it after I
previewed it??? I was in a hurry so I fear it was the latter...

Best, Stefan.

Re: smile Join MyOnlineTeam Today! smile & hugs Welcome to new membershugs

Thanks, Graham. I figured that you have been pretty busy getting back up and running. Just thinking about what happened to you happening to me makes me sick.

And welcome to all the new members, especially Laughing 66607 whom I will take personal credit for having used devious methods prayingbeat up to get here.

Pat, I don't post much here but I read everything so much that I feel like I know these people. And a great group they are. Remember - you and I (and several others) may not have the processing power and numbers of the big hitters, but the pay is the same.

virtual machines and point output

Hi Folks,

I was unable to find my post in another thread so here is the info:

As Graham described in one of his last posts a single PC running plain
Windows is limited to some 960 points per 24h. If you run virtual
machines (simulating multiple PCs in one physical PC which enables
you to start multiple WCG clients) you can get many more.

I have some numbers for my workstation (two 2.8GHz Intel P4 XEON CPUs):

2 machines (one per physical CPU):
-----------------------------------------
Running 2 virtual machines with 768MB each I get 670 points per machine
and day, that's 1340 points per day with one PC.

scores per machine:

CPU: 148 (machine 1) / 151 (machine 2)
MEM: 200 (768 MB)
STOR: 196
NET: 100
--------------
OVERALL: 149-150

4 machines (two per physical CPU, using hyperthreading):
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Running 4 virtual machines with 384 MB each I get fine proof of the HTT
concept! I got 515, 519, 521 and 515 per 24h which is a total of 2070
points per day ON A SINGLE PC!

CPU: 133 (m1) / 134 (m2 + m3) / 137 (m4)
MEM: 100 (384 MB)
STOR: 196
NET: 100
--------------
OVERALL: 118 (m1-3) / 119 (m4)

The single machine had a CPU score of 155, the two machines got
scored 148 and 151 -- the small loss is due to the fact that an idle
Linux machine still has some system tasks running and with one WCG
machine these sytem tasks had a real CPU to run on -- when they
had to compete with two machines they still had HTT to squeeze in
but a small loss is normal. But with 4 machines you would expect a
total breakdown if you expected that HTT didn't work for WCG (or
didn't work at all). But a medium CPU score (which is measured by
a benchmark!) of 134.5 (133+134+134+137 divided by 4) is almost
90% (89.97%) of 149.5 -- the medium CPU score of two machines
(148+151 divided by two). This means that each of the 4 machines
runs at 90% of the speed of each machine in the 2-machine-setting.

If you wonder why the overall score is only 118-119 -- it's because
of the low memory (only 384MB = score 100) per machine in the
4-machine-setting.

If I were to add more RAM (say another 4 GB) so I could assign 1152 MB
to each of the four machines I think I could rise the total score by at
least 30% (does anybody know the total score of a machine with a
CPU score of 134 and mem 300, storage 196 and net 100???). I already
pointed out in an earlier post that total score gain and point output gain
are roughly proportional. This would mean that the maximum point output
of a virtual machine (running two per HTT-enabled CPU) is at least
670 (517+30%) or even higher. This leads to the assumption that

DUAL 2.8GHz HTT PCs CAN OUTPUT SOME 2700 POINTS PER 24H OR MORE

The proof for 2070 with only 2GB of RAM (1.5 GB used) is now already
given.

The single client on native Windows was 814 pts/24h, running on 1 CPU.
1 CPU in the 4-machine setting and enough RAM is at least 1350 pts/24h,
that's 165% of the native setting!!

SINGLE HTT PCs (e.g. 3.4GHz) SHOULD BE ABLE TO OUTPUT 160-170%
if you installed VMware and run two clients if enough RAM is provided.

If you don't have enough RAM you still win ... one 2.8GHz CPU under
Windows with 1152 GB RAM = 8154 points, one CPU running 2 clients
with 384 MB each = 1035 Points (not to speak about the second 1035
points from the second CPU).

This was wrong: (Please, somebody tell me the total score of a 119-CPU-score-machine with all other scores to the max...)

Correction: I need the total score of a 134-CPU-score-machine with all other scores to the max...

Best, Stefan.

Re: virtual machines and point output

... one thing I forgot:

You DON'T NEED LINUX to run VMware!!! It's available for Windows as well
and once installed it allows you to run virtual PCs with W98, W3.1, W2K,
NT, XP, MS-DOS, various Windows Server versions, Linux, Sun Solaris 9 or 10,
Novell Netware 5 or 6, Free BSD and others. Don't forget, it's a HARDWARE
emulation, not software -- you should be able to install almost any OS that
can be installed on a standard PC.

You can download VMware Workstation 5 (that's the product you're looking
for) as a 30-day trial version (that cleanly uninstalls) here:

http://www.vmware.com

Boost your point output if you have a DUAL CPU or HTT enabled CPU!!!
The download version costs some $135 (street price) -- the packaged one
a little more.

Best, Stefan.
