Ebola Research Update

There are currently no licensed Ebola vaccines but several pharma companies are developing potential candidates. Merck and Janssen are the two companies furthest along in the development of an Ebola Vaccine.

Antibodies from Ebola survivor could lead to treatments and vaccines

NIH Research Matters reports:

-Antibodies from an Ebola survivor protected mice and ferrets against all three ebolaviruses that cause outbreaks in humans.

-The findings will help form the development of potential treatments and vaccines for Ebola and related viruses.

Ebola vaccine tested in adults and children in Africa hailed a success

Experts at St. George's, University of London, have reported that an Ebola vaccine is safe for children as well as adults and produces an immune response.

A randomized placebo-controlled phase 2 trial of two vaccines that was rapidly initiated and completed in Liberia showed the capability of conducting rigorous research during an outbreak. By 1 month after vaccination, the vaccines had elicited immune responses that were largely maintained through 12 months

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that health communication and social mobilization efforts to improve the public's knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding Ebola virus disease (Ebola) were important in controlling the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in Guinea which resulted in 3,814 reported Ebola cases and 2,544 deaths.

Researchers Inhibit Ebola Virus
The incurable Ebola virus has long been feared due to its high mortality rate and danger of infection. Now researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Phillips Universität Marburg have succeeded in inhibiting the virus in cell cultures. The researchers hope to be able to continue doing animal testing and developing an actual drug.
