Re: Interesting News Articles About Ebola

Vaccination method that wiped out smallpox gets unleashed today on Ebola
As Ebola outbreak flares, experimental vaccine gets trial by fire.

"With more than 7,500 doses of an experimental vaccine against Ebola, health officials today began a vaccination campaign to try to thwart the latest outbreak of the deadly virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to the World Health Organization, the campaign will start with healthcare workers operating in areas affected by the outbreak. Then officials will focus on a “ring vaccination” strategy, which targets people who have had contact with someone with a confirmed case of Ebola, as well as people who have had contact with those contacts. (This creates rings of vaccination around each case, hence the name)."

NIH begins testing Ebola treatment in early-stage trial
A first-in-human trial evaluating an experimental treatment for Ebola virus disease has begun at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The Phase 1 clinical trial is examining the safety and tolerability of a single monoclonal antibody called mAb114, which was developed by scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of NIH, and their collaborators. Investigators aim to enroll between 18 and 30 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 60. The trial will not expose participants to the Ebola virus.

Book lifts lid on litany of mistakes in Ebola outbreak that killed 11,300 people

A British doctor and Irish diplomat who worked on the frontline of the crisis in West Africa in 2014 say failures by international aid agencies and donors exacerbated the catastrophe.

In the new book Getting to Zero, the duo show how a litany of mistakes made in distant offices in New York, Washington, London, and Geneva, combined with poor leadership in Sierra Leone and a weak health service, created a catastrophe that could have been prevented.
