I know I am shouting! Ebola research should have a sense of urgency. We are all sitting here waiting for a project to put the $$$ behind OpenCL programing. If the project wants results quickly then enable GPU. Even if you don't want it quickly, enable GPU. I returned 28000 WUs for HCC on my GPU. After 5 years of CPU I am not even close to that many results on Mapping Cancer.
I like that you added Android. I have 11 Droid procs crunching Aids everyday but I have 2700 procs that can work on Ebola. Also, let the Intel graphics chips in on the Work too. I just bought an i7 4970k with a HD4600 in it. More crunching potential for Ebola. I know I am not the only one. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO ENABLE OPENCL. |

While as much as everyone here wants to use their GPUs for various projects on the Grid, you must understand that the application was built for CPUs and would require time and effort to make it work with GPUs. Also, just because one project benefited from using GPUs, doesn't mean that every project will.

I can only agree! I have five HD7970's sitting doing nothing!
----------------------------------------Let's get this project moving with some GPU tasks...

It would be great but I seem to remember something about how Autodock Vina isn't suitable for GPU computations, meaning it wouldn't yield any useful results Not to mention it would take a lot of manpower, time and money to develop a GPU app.
----------------------------------------You could run Linux instead of Windows because Vina tasks can be a lot faster on Linux (up 60% if I am not mistakened). AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

@mymbtheduke:
----------------------------------------There's a lot written about this topic of GPU crunching in the GPU Support Forum, e.g. in this thread: GPU. To make the most of my GPU (until a WCG GPU project does it ![]() ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

I understand that it does not work for every project and if it does, it could take a few months with a developer or two. That cost isn't insignificant ($50K to 100K). But I am hopeful that if enough projects did GPU dev with OpenCL that the work could be used by others. That 3 months can shave years off a project.
----------------------------------------If I am wrong please correct me. I would like to hear it from a project lead. I am not trying to be demanding but I am paying for 2 PCs and 3 Android devices to run WCG 24x7. This costs me money too. Three of my relatives have cancer. This is a race against time. Even more so with Ebola. People are dying within weeks. [Edit 1 times, last edit by mymbtheduke at Dec 6, 2014 7:30:59 PM] |

Thanks I have 56Million on GPUGrid. I know it was discussed in the GPU forum but nothing is happening.

mymbtheduke,
----------------------------------------I would love to see a GPU app too, but if like I said the software simply isn't suitable for GPU's as I seem to remember the scientists say (a forum search should clear that up), then any effort to make an app that will not work as intended is useless. Use 64-bit Linux on those PC's to run the VINA app and you will see a huge speedup versus Windows 64-bit. I have 3 AMD APU's which have GPU's integrated. The A8-6500 has a HD8570D with 432.1 gigaflops (according to AMD), the A10-5700 has a HD7660D with 614 gigaflops and the A8-4500M has a HD7640G with 253.95 gigaflops (not sure at what core speed that is). Weak when compared to other GPUs though I would really like to have them crunching too at WCG. AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by Falconet at Dec 6, 2014 7:35:36 PM] |

What's a GPU?
----------------------------------------![]() Ok, seriously, for this project, it is harder to find even CPU WUs than a virgin on Hollywood Blvd. If they have such problems to provide even an adequate number of WUs for "regular" crunchers, do you really think there is a point in demanding GPU WUs? I have 30 hosts running WCG WUs, none with a GPU and even though I set OET as the only default project, I have only managed to get 24 WUs among them, with only 4 currently still in progress. All the other WUs being crunched are random downloads as there aren't any/enough OET WUs to go around. Ralf ![]() |

I can understand the demand/wish for a gpu version. But my understanding is, that the vina application wasn't developed by oet scientists or even fah scientists. The vina application is also used outside of wcg.
----------------------------------------As long as the developers of the vina application don't provide/develop a gpu version of it, we won't see oet or fah as a gpu project. ![]() |
