Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I ordered a Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 for €90+points. It has 8 cores at 1.0 Ghz (4) and 1.5 Ghz(4), 11 GB of usable disk space and 2 GB of RAM. While I won't run it for sure on BOINC, I will surely install BOINC to check the benchmarks.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I have an old HTC Flyer tablet gathering dust in a drawer. It has Android 3.something (Honeycomb). A long time ago I was able to run BOINC on that, but right now the app is not supported on that version of Android.

Is there a way to use it for WCG?

Hey bono_vox

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.boinc.nativeboinc
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.boinc.androboinc

Those two are supposed to work at and above 1.5 (andro) and 2.2 (native).
They haven't been updated in years but give it a try anyway.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Thanks Falconet for the info and welcome smile

Yes it's been a while since my last post, but I've been visiting the site and forums regularly.

For the description on google play, it seems that androboinc is just a program to check progress on other devices, not really to do computation. But the Nativeboinc app seems the way to go. I'll try it.

Thanks for the suggestion KLiK, maybe I'll try that if the nativeboinc option fails.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Haha I guess you are right. I just knew about Androboinc but I didn't know it was just a monitoring tool.

Hope native works for you.

Did not see this pertinent info mentioned, but as per the System requirement page , the minimum requirement for WCG science apps is now Android 4.1. This is because only >= 4.1 understands PIE application management [Position Independent Executable] for enhanced security, which is what the WCG apps are compiled with.

NativeBOINC will not load on Lollipop 5.0 and above because as of 5.0 Android understands only PIE compliant apps. Sadly, no recompile where BoA is a highly stripped client which has sole purpose of KISS computing. Like to be able to remote in and out, which is what can be done with NB.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Yes, after trying -and failing- to run some OET WUs on my Flyer, I saw the minimum system requirements for Android. So I guess I'm out of luck for the time being, unless I try to install a newer (most likely unsupported) Android version on my tablet. I guess it's not worth the effort since this is a very ancient single-core ARM SoC anyway.

BTW, sorry for kind of hi-jacking this thread blushing
