New kid in the block, will 64 bit make a difference even if it has only 4 cores?

Only 1GB RAM would worry me. I have a dual core tablet with 512MB RAM, and it stopped processing ebola WUs with both cores running at the same time. I dropped it to one, and it worked just fine. I ended up dropping it as a cruncher since it was only single core at that point.
Edit: it was rooted with a custom ROM, and nothing else was running on the tablet except BOINC.

I've got two (and soon four) of quadcore android tv boxes with 1 GB RAM. They run fine with ebola.

Could be the tablet you had as the devices are not all created equal. I have several devices with 2 cores and 512MB RAM that crunch away just fine here and at other projects. I also have quad phones with 1GB RAM that do the same.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Yes, was probably the tablet. It is a rooted original Amazon kindle fire running 4.2.x I believe. It was getting stuck so regularly that I just took BOINC off. It now runs Netflix while I walk on the treadmill :)
I guess I could go look through the android forums. Maybe I can find a kitkat OS for it and try that. It's a shame to lose those extra two cores of crunching, especially now that we have Ebola, Zika, and I just saw the announcement of FAAH back online for the foreseeable future.
