Hughe runtime discrepancy between Linux and Windows

I think it's time to address the hughe discrepancy concerning runtimes between Linux and Windows in a seperate thread.

What team mates and I have observed so far is the following:

Linux 64 bit:
Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz Ubuntu 15.04 64 Bit (with HT): ~20 hrs/wu
Intel Core i7 CPU X 990 @ 3.47GHz Ubuntu 14.10 64 Bit (with HT): ~24 hrs/wu
Intel Core i7 CPU X 980 @ 3.33GHz Ubuntu 14.10 64 Bit (with HT): ~26 hrs/wu
Intel Core i7-3930k @ 3.3GHz Ubuntu 14.10 64 Bit (with HT): ~24 hrs/wu

Windows 64 bit:
Intel Core i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz Windows 8.1 Professional x64 (with HT): ~18.5 hrs/wu
Intel Core i7-4702MQ CPU @ 2.20GHz Windows 8.1 Core x64 (with HT): ~14 hrs/wu
Intel Core i7-3930k @ 3.3GHz Windows 7 Professional x64 (with HT): ~14 hrs/wu
Intel Xeon E5 2690 v2 Windows 7 x64 (with HT): ~14 hrs/wu
Intel Xeon E5 2690 v2 Windows 7 x64 (no HT): ~9 hrs/wu
Intel i5-3570K@3.4 GHz Windows (no HT): ~8.5 hrs/wu

Re: Huge runtime discrepancy between Linux and Windows

I am running an Intel Core i7-3770S CPU @ 3.10GHz with dual-boot and get:
~9.9 hrs/wu on Windows 7 64-bit. Ave points per hr CPU time = 34.6
~16.6 hrs/wu on Ubuntu 64-bit. Ave points per hr CPU time = 29.3

This on the same machine, with no HT on either.

During the BETA's run on the same hardware:

Windows 22-24 hours
Linux ~40 hours

4 that purpose I've put Linux(es) to work only on other projects...so it's now doing work only on MCM & OET!

after all, we do have a bunch of projects to run!

That's not a solution to solve the existing problem.

I doubt that it is a problem, more a fact of life. Linux is faster than Windows on most projects, this one is an exception. Maybe it can be "fixed", but maybe that is just how the software was developed. That is the usual explanation for why Linux is faster on VINA for example.

Re: Hughe runtime discrepancy between Linux and Windows

Perhaps. But if noone addresses the discrepancy there won't be a change though.

Yes, by all means bring it to their attention. The better the performance, the better for everyone.
