Re: Scheduled Maint. July 18, 14:00 UTC, extended?

@KerSamson

Qty 118 'Server Aborts' so far and still happening and counting up... these were all downloaded earlier today... waste of bandwidth at both ends...
I would not be so negative. Server abort is less painful than to have to compute the WUs even if it would not be necessary. On my side, I have only about 90 server aborted WUs for about 2'000 WUs in progress. It is finally negligible (in particular comparing to the daily received spam e-mails).

Not being negative - just pointing out a fact... and I am computing some before they are aborted - thankfully still being credited with the points. The problem is the aborts are taking too long and is still not completed... Here's an example of one that is in danger of being computed before it is aborted, and already had one compute turned invalid...

EDIT: Still processing WUs that are going Invalid or Too Late that were sent out when the WU already valid before the crash, and sent out again by mistake after the system came up. Can only assume that WCG are not aborting these any more and just waiting for us to crunch them, mark 'Too Late' or 'Invalid' and then give us credit and gradually 'flush' them all out that way...

Re: Scheduled Maint. July 18, 14:00 UTC, extended?

Thank you Yves,
My thoughts exactly.
I have enough issues running a couple of computers on windows by myself.
I would not like to know how on earth the admins keep the infrastructure of the WCG servers running as well as they do.
I personally trust them to do the right thing and their active communication with us when it comes to downtime, indicates (to me) that they try their best.

Still something not right. After the few invalid [not of my machine's doing], hundreds went through the PVer/PVal wingmanned cycle. Testing if ground is safe, all FAHV arrive with a pre-assigned wingman... 2 copies instead of 1. Device ID 3113135.

At 48% progress after 11 years [What?], don't think this science needs anyany duplication wastage.

Edit: There's the bad odor of a bug, if it is one, in the category of You gotta be kidding me: The post invalid validations from work already returned, hundreds, may not be counting towards re-establishing reliability. It has to be from new work, as after 16 NEW turned valid, latest items come o solo mio again.

Re: Scheduled Maint. July 18, 14:00 UTC, extended?

Why did additional copies get sent on the 20th when a quorum was established on the 18th? The last two copies went invalid. Were they being compared to the Windows versions?

Yes, IBM did a great job sponsoring WCG, but let's not loose track of reality here. When WCG was hosting the files in-house it worked more or less flawlessly for years. Since they have moved into the IBM cloud there have been two major melt-downs in short succession, the likes of which I cannot remember. I call that a big step back in reliability... And don't tell me this is a typical IT problem. It is not. We have a big 4 PB file server at my work place and it has been running completely reliably ever since it arrived.

You are kidding us, aren't you? If you have a short memory about really bad outages "when WCG was hosting...", try search on this forum. They were not that long time ago.

Cheers

Hopefully you will decide to use them where they will do the most good for mankind, regardless of your perception of any other members on any other site.

I fully agree with this statement - as, despite me being the most forgiving and agreeable person I believe I can be, I've previously been attacked in this forum - and, instead of retaliating, I decided to not lower myself to such 'games', just focus on the science and helping WCG move forward.
