Yes, millions of people are living a relatively normal, coronavirus-free life: https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/yes...virus-free-life-1.5249917 "on Dec. 31, 2019, Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control began implementing screening measures for inbound flights from Wuhan the same day the World Health Organization (WHO) was alerted to mysterious cases of a “viral pneumonia.” "[Taiwan's] CDC acted quickly, they were fast on contact tracing, and widespread mask use was adopted from the onset of the pandemic," According to OurWorldInData.org, Taiwan only saw a 0.6 per cent economic decline in the second quarter of 2020 compared to the same period a year earlier. By comparison, the U.S. saw a 9.5 per cent decline, Canada saw a 13.5 per cent decline, and the UK saw a 21.7 per cent decline during the same quarter. What an extraordinary country, never ceases to amaze me! Can't wait for the pandemic to be over so I can visit it again! [Edit 1 times, last edit by tanigawa at Jan 17, 2021 9:35:43 AM] |

COVID-19 severity linked to gut bacteria in first-of-its-kind study
A first-of-its-kind study has investigated the relationship between COVID-19 severity and the gut microbiome. The observational research suggests specific microbial patterns correlate with disease severity and those bacterial imbalances may account for some cases of “long COVID”. What's New | New COVID-19 Genomic Epidemiology ToolKit Released
----------------------------------------A toolkit will help epidemiologists apply genomic data to state and local investigations and track SARS-CoV-2 strains circulating in their jurisdictions. It consists of modular video presentations, audio transcripts, case studies, scientific narratives, examples/templates, job aids, reference documents, and external links. https://www.cdc.gov/amd/whats-new/index.html ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Jan 12, 2021 4:04:20 AM] |

Researchers Discover New Variant of COVID-19 Virus in Columbus, Ohio
Scientists at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine have discovered a new variant of SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The new variant carries a mutation identical to the U.K. strain, but it likely arose in a virus strain already present in the United States. The researchers also report the evolution of another U.S. strain that acquired three other gene mutations not previously seen together in SARS-CoV2. https://wexnermedical.osu.edu/mediaroom/press...ing/new-sars-cov2-variant |

Brazilian Covid variant may infect people who have recovered from virus
The Brazilian coronavirus variant may infect people who have already recovered from Covid, scientists said as they called for urgent investigations into whether the new mutation can escape previous immunity. Britain is preparing to ban travel to Brazil over concerns about importing the new variant. The move follows a huge rise in cases in Manaus, a city that had been believed to be close to herd immunity from the first wave. Research published last year suggested that 76 per cent of people in Manaus had contracted coronavirus by October, which should have severely limited onward spread of the virus. However, the city saw an unexpected surge of new cases last month and has now declared a state of emergency, with hospitals reaching 100 per cent capacity. A new study by an international team of researchers, including scientists at Imperial College and Edinburgh University, found that 41 per cent of cases in Manaus are now caused by the new variant. It has mutated to be more infectious and carries changes that help it evade the immune system. Genetic sequencing has shown that at least one person who caught the virus in the first wave has been infected with the new variant. Scientists warned there had been a "rapid increase" in cases in locations where previous infection rates were thought to have been very high. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/14/b...ple-have-recovered-virus/ You may need a subscription to see the full article. But The Telegraph has very good coronavirus coverage, due in part to the good genomic sequencing abilities of the British labs. If you want to know what is going on , that is what you will need. |

CDC warns highly transmissible coronavirus variant to become dominant in U.S.

Reductions in 2020 US life expectancy due to COVID-19 and the disproportionate impact on the Black and Latino populations
"We project that COVID-19 will reduce US life expectancy in 2020 by 1.13 y. Estimated reductions for the Black and Latino populations are 3 to 4 times that for Whites. Consequently, COVID-19 is expected to reverse over 10 y of progress made in closing the Black-White gap in life expectancy and reduce the previous Latino mortality advantage by over 70%. Some reduction in life expectancy may persist beyond 2020 because of continued COVID-19 mortality and long-term health, social, and economic impacts of the pandemic."
