New drug has potential to turn COVID-19 virus against itself
A new drug designed by scientists at Scripps Research can turn the COVID-19 virus into a harbinger of its own doom. The drug, NMT5, described in Nature Chemical Biology on September 29, 2022, coats SARS-CoV-2 with chemicals that can temporarily alter the human ACE2 receptor—the molecule the virus normally latches onto to infect cells. That means that when the virus is near, its path into human cells via the ACE2 receptor is blocked; in the absence of the virus, however, ACE2 can function as usual. https://www.scripps.edu/news-and-events/press...0220929-lipton-covid.html |

Fast-Spreading New COVID-19 Subvariant XBB Is Part of a ‘New Class’ of Omicron
- Yahoo News, 18 Oct 2022 - Mot a lot is known about it yet, but it seems to evade immunity from existing vaccines and/ot prior infections with strains of the virus previous to it. There is no evidence that it causes more severe infections than the earlier Omicron variants, but it seems to be even more infectious. So there still seems to be a place for a greater range of anti-virals. Get your acts together, Forli Lab and Krembil, and get this project really moving. |
