I know it's probably not appropriate to post this here but I still like to express my frustration after months of crunching for this project. With so many variants, spreading faster and dealier, coming out, my question is: ARE WE FIGHTING A LOSING WAR? I'm not a biologist or a doctor so I don't quite understand the project description on Forli Lab's web site. Can someone tell me that we are crunching to look for sth that target Covid-Sar-2 in general, including all variants, not variant bound, not like current vaccines? Please give me some hope before I commit more compting power. In conjunction with what Mike Gibson says, this is basic research. The more we know about the virus, the better we are able to figure out how to fight it. It may have one or more Achilles's heels which will let us figure the best way to attack it, minimize its effects or be able to cure somebody who is infected. Eliminating it entirely is probably out of reach, but but we can make it a nuisance rather than a killer would be a laudable goal. Cheers
Sgt. Joe

How well masks protect
----------------------------------------A detailed study shows the maximum risks of being infected by the coronavirus for different scenarios with and without masks German Max-Planck-Institute tested a scenario where an infected and a healthy person stay in the same room with different parameters. "Even at 3 meters (9 feet) distance, it takes less than five minutes for an unvaccinated person standing in the breath of a person with Covid-19 to become infected with almost 100 percent certainty." "If both the infected and the non-infected person wear well-fitting FFP2 (KN95) masks, the maximum risk of infection after 20 minutes is hardly more than one per thousand, even at the shortest distance. If their masks fit poorly, the probability of infection increases to about four percent. If both wear well-fitting medical masks, the virus is likely to be transmitted within 20 minutes with a maximum probability of ten percent" "We wanted to calculate the risk as conservatively as possible, Under these conditions, if even the largest theoretical risk is small, then you're on the very safe side under real conditions" https://www.mpg.de/17916867/coronavirus-masks-risk-protection "Our results also suggest that the use of FFP2 masks should be preferred to surgical masks, as even loosely worn FFP2 masks can reduce the risk of infection by a factor of 2.5 compared with well-fitted surgical masks." "We conclude that wearing appropriate masks in the community provides excellent protection for others and oneself, and makes social distancing less important." https://www.pnas.org/content/118/49/e2110117118 (there you can also see results if only the non-infected wears a mask) ![]() [Edit 3 times, last edit by Landorin at Dec 4, 2021 11:27:31 AM] |

Extended mRNA vaccine dosing intervals improve effectiveness
----------------------------------------In the "short interval" group, there were 18 to 28 days between the first and second dose, and 24 to 49 days in the "medium interval" group. The evaluation showed clear differences. In terms of ability to neutralize, the values in the “short distance” group averaged 54.6 after two doses and 230.8 in the “medium distance” group . Differences were even bigger when 6 months passed between the shots. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2786992 ![]() |
