There is a new variant on Delta starting to circulate - AY4.2. It has 2 spikes instead of 1.

I googled AY4.2 (thanks for the info Mike, even if is worse than a jump scare). So far it doesn't look like we have much info on AY4.2 and it isn't concerning enough (yet?) to get a Greek letter. Just wanted to mention this so there is less panic (than I had) upon seeing this news.

AY.4.2 seems to have a 10% extra transmissability rate than Delta. Provisional Data!

Viral Infections Could Promote Neurodegeneration
Some viral diseases could possibly contribute to neurodegeneration. DZNE researchers report this in the scientific journal “Nature Communications”. Their assessment is based on laboratory experiments in which they were able to show that certain viral molecules facilitate intercellular spreading of protein aggregates that are hallmarks of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. These findings may provide clues how acute or chronic viral infections could contribute to neurodegeneration. [Covid19 is a possible candidate] More at: https://www.dzne.de/en/news/press-releases/pr...romote-neurodegeneration/ |

Recommended reporting items forecasting and predicting research: The EPIFORGE 2020 guidelines
----------------------------------------The importance of infectious disease epidemic forecasting and prediction research is underscored by decades of communicable disease outbreaks, including COVID-19. Unlike other fields of medical research, such as clinical trials and systemic reviews, no reporting guidelines. exist for reporting epidemic forecasting and prediction research despite their utility. Researchers developed the EPIFORGE checklist, a guideline for standardized reporting of epidemic forecasting research. https://themedicalprogress.com/2021/10/20/new...emic-prediction-research/ ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Oct 21, 2021 2:48:29 PM] |

Study reveals how COVID-19 can directly damage brain cells
New research published in the journal Nature Neuroscience is the first to demonstrate how the SARS-CoV-2 virus can directly damage cells in the brain. An international group of scientists found vascular cells that comprise the blood-brain barrier can be destroyed by the virus and this may lead to the neurological symptoms, both short and long-term, commonly reported from COVID-19. Scientists Identify New Antibody For Covid, Variants
Research collaboration between scientists at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has identified and tested an antibody that limits the severity of infections from a variety of coronaviruses, including those that cause COVID-19 as well as the original SARS illness. "This antibody binds to the coronavirus at a location that is conserved across numerous mutations and variations," Haynes said. "As a result, it can neutralize a wide range of coronaviruses." https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/scientists-id...9-variants-report-2597625 |
