Re: Battery swelling

I see you are running many Android devices... Never get hot? You don't worry?

No, only the 2 phones I mentioned above get hot so I just use 1 core or 2 cores + the fan. The other 2 phones are fairly new so I use 2~4 cores, they don't get hot whatsoever.

The TV-box is the only Android device that runs 24/7. It's got an old CPU (the CPU even got its own heatsink laughing ) so I just run it w/ 1 core + the fan. The fan is not really a fan but a CPU cooler I took off an old PC, wired it to a USB cord, enough to do the job. I line up the 2 old phones and the TV-box and the small fan would cool them off.

Can you put the charger on a timer for the older phones? For example firgure out long it takes to get to 20 to 30% battery left and the charger kicks on, charges to 90+% then cycles off again. Some of the newer timers have multiple times per day they can click on and off.

Re: Battery swelling

Unless you can run it by tricking it into thinking you have a battery but no battery... you should use an ARM Android like Amazon FireTV that has no battery. All my smartphones eventually bloat and die. Some do better than others, but I have half a dozen phones I've retired... Motorola, Alcatel (although certain brands do better than others), Samsung, etc. Yeah, for the amount of RAC they produce, how much you have to baby them when they freeze from overheating, battery bloat, etc... its just cheaper to buy yourself an old Dell i5 desktop and you'll produce more RAC w/ no hassle.

Re: Battery swelling

Have yet to bring it into the store. And actually I don't really care if it can be fixed or not. I just want to get my data off of it. I will probably take care of this this weekend.
The only android device I am using now is my Lenovo, which is newer. It seems to work ok and only gets warm. And I do not run all cores. And leave it in open air without the case.

It can run without being plugged in. So I let it discharge to around 40 and then it will automatically stop until I charge it.

The older phones I will not use again.

Re: Battery swelling

I have ran several phones with bloated batteries. Some even popping the screens off. None have exploded yet. The phone typically just dies before that happens. Not saying that I advise people to do it. Just stating that it is quite common. Some phones you can even remove the battery and solder a USB cable to the battery connectors. Some you cannot. Some will even run with no battery while plugged into USB. Some will not.

Well, it's a mindset thing. It's not about buying a new PC, not about how cheap a powerful PC is, not about having the money or not. Some people, like me, don't like throwing away old stuff while they are still functioning well. If you threw them away, you'd create electronic garbage. It's not a good idea solving a problem by creating another one. So, why not find a way to keep them alive. Crunching for WCG is the best way out for all those retiring phones.

Re: Battery swelling

I just lost my Huawei P10 Lite to battery bloat on the weekend. The battery popped the back cover off and I didn't even know, because it was held together by the protective case. Probably I shouldn't have had the case on it.

It had approx. 10 WUs in its queue, both OPN and MCM. Apologies to wingmen who are waiting for those WUs to be returned. :( I will not be powering it up again.
