So my BOINC Client decided to start requesting work for my GPU - and only GPU, with WCG projects. I've done everything I can on my end to troubleshoot -
----------------------------------------requested on WCG's end, to not opt into GPU work (it's not available rn anyway, and this cheap laptop only has a cheap pentium integrated graphics anyway), turned off everything GPU related in BOINC manager - and still, only request GPU work. It fetches CPU work from other projects just fine, but it's picking on WCG, for no apparent reason. I even tried removing WCG and reinstalling it. Thought it fixed it - the initialization first request, requested CPU and GPU work, as it did before. It downloaded all the necessary files again - annnndd nope. I send an update request a few minutes later, and no work comes in - it's requesting work for Intel GPU only. I check my results tab - and I have a list of 8-10 tasks, saying that they were detached. They didn't exist in my BOINC manager, ever. What the heck is going on, here? Feeling very stupid, and frustrated. help? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by yoerik at Jul 28, 2020 6:20:43 AM] |

On the website:
settings device manager (choose device profile for problem PC) custom profile in processor usage section set 'Allow research to run on my CPU?' to yes save settings This setting sometimes changes of its own accord! The client needs to communicate with the server to find the new value and a second time to request CPU work. Good luck |

While I wish it was that, it ain't, and my laptop is now unable to contribute. To rule out device profiles altogether, another laptop on the same profile is working just fine. Hence, it's a BOINC Client issue - and I have no idea where the heck to start. ![]() |

It is always worth changing it to 'no'; saving settings; change back to 'yes' and save again. It may not work but it is simple and safe to try

Try clearing local settings.
----------------------------------------Options, Computing Preferences, Use Web prefs (only there if using Local Preferences). Paul.

yoerik,
As PMH_UK says, you may have changed the setting locally which would override anything you set on the website. The other thing is, you appear to be contributing towards other projects like Rosetta from your signature. The BOINC client will use the website settings created on the most recent project. Say you made the setting change in Rosetta last week, the boinc client will use those for your computer. If you make the change here, you will need to do two server requests to World Community Grid before your client will attempt to download new work. I hope this helps. Thanks, -Uplinger |

BOINC checks which project had the last timestamp change on a profile while communicating with each in round robin, so if Default was changed last at Rosetta that's the one made 'global' applying to all projects attached to a client [of course this onky applies to clients which are associated with Default in the example]. This applies to computing preferences, not project selections. The BUT was noted by others, make a local change and web prefs are taken from the global prefs in effect and thereafter until local prefs are explicitly cleared again. Think this includes overruling the prefs as communicated by an Account Manager like BAM.

PMH_UK - I set it to use web-based settings, and switched back and forth between them (with 2 updates a few minutes apart, as uplinger mentioned) and no difference.
----------------------------------------Web-based and local-based seem to have no impact. There is no setting on my local end from what I can see, tearing through the entire BOINC Manager, stopping it from requesting CPU work. And it requests CPU and GPU work from Rosetta, Uplinger - WCG is my priority, but it seems the only issue is with WCG, for some bizarre reason. I have been using local preferences for the vast majority of my time at WCG - and this issue only comes up now, out of nowhere. I removed BAM after the glitch it caused, to set the project to detach, Lavaflow - I haven't altered settings on other attached projects at all, either. Again to be clear - the client does request work, just not for the CPU - which is a problem, because WCG doesn't have GPU work, and my GPU isn't likely to be useful for it anyway. I disabled all GPU settings I possibly could, no difference made. I know resource share isn't an issue - WCG is set to have a resource share of 10,000 - and I am rambling and I am sorry for that, to be upfront. I'm just lost - I always considered myself tech savvy, and this is an issue where I've attempted as much as I possibly can that I'm aware of. I restarted the computer to see if that was an issue - the only thing I haven't done is reinstall BOINC, and I'm sorely tempted, because I'm not aware of any other options. ![]() |

If you have an app_config.xml and cc_config.xml rename both temporarily and restart client. Do explicitly clear local computing prefs in client so the web profile setting will rule. After that, and forcing a communication with WCG, post content of both global_prefs.xml and global_prefs_override.xml (latter should not exist if you cleared local computing prefs).
----------------------------------------Of course, the event log too, the whole thing from client restart till after forced WCG communication. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 28, 2020 5:18:17 PM] |
