I completed a work unit and returned it on 16th July, yet is still sits there "awaiting validation". I have completed another today that validated immediately.
----------------------------------------What is wrong with the first one ? I think I've had a couple of days wait in the past but never a week. at 0:044:22:44:33 I am just a whisker away from the silver badge! ![]() Cheers Alan ![]() ![]() |

Say that you and someone else received the work unit at the same time; then they get about a week to return it to the servers to compare to your result. They may not get done in time or their computer may no longer be online. Only once the deadline for their result passes will the servers send it out again to someone else, only this time someone seen as reliable (returns results within a few days) with half the time limit. This can continue for several iterations if you have bad luck with slow or offline partners.
----------------------------------------For the one you had validate immediately, someone else had already completed a pass on the work unit and you might have been the one making up the result for someone who failed to return in time or whose computer went offline. Every ARP work unit must be validated by two individuals. In a rare case where two people get different results you could even see a third person get involved to settle the dispute. ![]() |

If you look up the respective units in 'Results Status' and click on the result name, it will open a new window with all copies listed. Yours will be highlighted. You will then be able to see when each copy was sent and returned and the status of each copy. Both will be validated if another copy has been returned and produced the same answer as yours. The first copy will have the suffix 0, the next1 and if there are discrepancies or 'No Reply' then 2 or 3, etc. until 2 answers match. A unit will be withdrawn for analysis if 4 'Errors' occur. As you are a relative newbie on ARP, can you please confirm that you are not using more than half your threads on ARP at any one time because there can be problems caused by exceeding that level. The other threads can be used for other projects. Mike |

Hi Mike
----------------------------------------Thanks for your message. Yes I've had a look and it seems the second copy wasn't returned in time so it's been sent to a third party. In fact until the recent tip in the "July update " to increase how many you can hold at one time, I only ever had one on my PC at a time. I have now changed that to two. Is that what you meant ? I am still a newbie ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The good news is that the latest copy has a deadline of only 4.5 days, so another 2.5 days from now. Provided that it is returned in time and it agrees with your result. You never know...... Thank you for upping ARP to 2 units at a time. Are you using the other 2 cores as well? It is ok as long as they are not ARP. I assume the cores are not hyperthreaded. If they are then you would be able to double up again. We all start as newbies and you will gradually build up your knowledge of the system, especially if you keep an eye on these fora. There are plenty of clever people helping here (I'm just an old hand). Mike |

Yes, I'm running all the other projects of WCG. System is Intel Core i5 (3550) 3.3 Ghz (running at 3.92 Ghz with a decent cooler, even during the hot spell last week it stayed under 60 C). I don't think it's hyperthreaded. my boinc settings are to use up to 100% of CPU and it always runs 4 concurrently so I don't think I can change this to 8 unless you know differently?

The 3550 is 4 threads.
----------------------------------------https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Inte...50+%40+3.30GHz&id=825 If it could do 8 threads it would say Cores: 4 Threads: 8 I run no ARP at all on my 1 Win10 laptop I have (i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz). Windows reboots after an update and if you are hours since a checkpoint then you lose that time. Now you are times 2. The 3550 is only about 2x my i5-2520M. To make up I upped my Ryzen 9 3900X to 3 ARPS. If I had monster Win10 then it would be different. [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Jul 24, 2021 3:28:45 PM] |

Well my wait is over - the other result has finally come in !

I was quicker so should score more not less ;-) ![]() ![]() |

You both received 632.5 points. Yours just took less time.
If a WU is worth 600 points you should get 600 points whether it takes 1 hour or 24 hours. While the other guy was crunching the same WU you were getting points on another WU. So you do get more points. |
